Write a personal response to an artwork shown in class lecture (so far this semester) that has had a personal impact on you (the slide images from all lectures are posted on Canvas). Identify the formal elements, imagery, and/or meaning that led you to an affinity with that particular work. Consider how your own cultural identity may be affecting how you interpret this work.
Objectives
This assignment is intended to help you develop your skills in:
Close looking at art: noticing details, composition, materials, etc.
Putting your visual observations into writing
Intercultural competancy: Intercultural knowledge, teamwork, and cultural humility
Formal expectations
Complete sentences; 700 words. Any sources should be cited.

Your essay should include the following:
Clearly identify the work about which you are writing (title, date, location, figure # in the book if possible).
Description: Provide a detailed physical description of the artwork pictured, paying attention to elements such as composition, scale, medium, surface texture, etc. (review the introduction to the textbook for such terms, and try to employ them correctly). Write your description in full paragraphs, thinking about how best to organize it. One way to approach this assignment is to imagine that you are describing the work to a friend who is blindfolded. You have to give enough information that they can imagine the piece without seeing it. Your description should be at least one full page.
Personal analysis: Discuss why you feel a personal connection to this work of art. You may connect with formal elements, such as the aesthetics of form, color or line; you may find something meaningful about the subject matter, or the history connected to the work. Explain the connection; you may write this section in first person. You are free to share a personal reflection, story or history as part of your analysis. You should consider your own cultural perspective as you write this section. This section should be at least one page.
