April 28, 2024

PROMPT: What do you think are two learning barriers that students encounter? In other words, identify two reasons why a student struggles in school. In this thesis-driven essay, you will use ideas from our class readings, videos, your own experience, and logic arguments/rhetoric to think about possible causes and solutions to the questions above. Address each of the two learning barriers in separate body paragraphs and offer ample support to prove that they are barriers. Do not address the solutions at all until the conclusion paragraph when you address the proposals. The body paragraphs need to focus on proving that the barriers that you are talking about are legitimate.
AUDIENCE: Students who are at risk of failing or quitting and teachers who are trying to help.
PURPOSE: Persuade students and teachers to adopt specific ways of thinking and take specific actions.
Grading Guidelines
Offer a complete introductory paragraph (hook, summary, and thesis).
Each body paragraph (excluding the naysayer paragraph) should provide supporting points from both categories:
A. A quote from at least one reading from our unit
B. Experiences, observations, and/or illustrations for support of your developed topic sentences.
The conclusion must restate the thesis and offer a developed, specific, and accessible proposal.
Avoid logical fallacies.
Don’t forget to utilize signal phrases and transitions for clarity and be aware of the point-of-view that you are using.
Proofread your work for structural and grammatical errors.
You do not have to create a Works Cited page. Focus on the reading source that is assigned to the prompt that you respond to as well as rhetoric. If you want to use up to two sources that we did not look at in class to support your arguments in addition to the reading from class, feel free to do so, but you WILL be required to create a Works Cited page for these new sources.
