This semester, we have read some of Ernest Hemingway’s most classic writings, all of which contribute to the course’s overarching theme: The Personal Struggle. The characters we’ve come to know endure struggles that are realistic, touching, compelling, and represent the human condition. Whether their struggles are mental, physical, emotional, or a combination of those, we see great strength and fortitude in the way they push ahead despite their hardships. And no matter if Hemingway is writing in a dense abstract manner, or a simple straightforward style, we readers are always left interpreting the meaning of his work through his rich use of literary elements (such as symbolism, imagery, inferences, dialogue, and analysis).
Santiago, from The Old Man and The Sea in particular, is a unique character—he demonstrates tremendous fortitude in spite of the many odds stacked against him. His journey makes us question the purpose of one’s life, destiny, fate, heroism, and legacy, to name a few.
Task
You are writing a logically structured and well developed essay that discusses Santiago’s motivation for his treacherous experience, and the qualities he exhibits along the way. You must back up your claims with textual evidence, and in-text citations, and your evidence must then be further discussed with your own analysis. For clarity and cohesion, your essay should be structured as follows:

Conclusion= A mirror image of your Intro… Rephrase your thesis. Remind reader of the topics discussed in your body paragraphs. End on a philosophical note, leaving the reader with something to think about.
This is a 7 paragraph essay. Intro, Conc, and a required 5 body paragraphs.
In each body paragraph, you must thoroughly explain each quotation, and then demonstrate critical thinking by offering insight. Some helpful questions to elicit your analysis:
• What is really happening here, symbolically?
• Why is this important?
• What is the meaning of this on a grand scale?
• What is the author’s purpose in writing this?
• How does this contribute to or enhance the theme?
• What is this character’s flaw or weakness? What causes him to act in this way?
• What might the character be thinking, wishing, hoping for?
Double-spaced, 12 pt font, left-hand justified heading, original title, and a balanced treatment of the text, and your analysis of it.
