Prompt

This semester, we have read some of Ernest Hemingway’s most classic writings, all of which contribute to the course’s overarching theme: The Personal Struggle. The characters we’ve come to know endure struggles that are realistic, touching, compelling, and represent the human condition. Whether their struggles are mental, physical, emotional, or a combination of those, we see great strength and fortitude in the way they push ahead despite their hardships. And no matter if Hemingway is writing in a dense abstract manner, or a simple straightforward style, we readers are always left interpreting the meaning of his work through his rich use of literary elements (such as symbolism, imagery, inferences, dialogue, and analysis).

Santiago, from The Old Man and The Sea in particular, is a unique character—he demonstrates tremendous fortitude in spite of the many odds stacked against him. His journey makes us question the purpose of one’s life, destiny, fate, heroism, and legacy, to name a few.

Task

You are writing a logically structured and well developed essay that discusses Santiago’s motivation for his treacherous experience, and the qualities he exhibits along the way. You must back up your claims with textual evidence, and in-text citations, and your evidence must then be further discussed with your own analysis. For clarity and cohesion, your essay should be structured as follows:

Introduction Paragraph= Hook, Title/Author, Thesis Statement
i’m going to attach a document that myy professor posted to help with the introduction ( Hook, Title/Author, Thesis Statement)

Body Paragraph 1= Discuss the topic of SUFFERING (Use the quotations found in your Week 11 Entry for reference! Just expand your analysis!) 2 quotations

These are the quotes i used for week 11

“No one should be alone in their old age, he thought. But it is unavoidable” pg 17

“He settled comfortably against the wood and took his suffering as it came and the fish swam steadily and the boat moved slowly through the dark water” pg 24

Body Paragraph 2= Discuss the topic of RESPECT (Use your Week 11 Entry work) 2 quotations

These are the quotes i used for week 11

“How many people will he feed, he thought. But are they worthy to eat him? No, of course not.

There is no one worthy of eating him from the manner of his behaviour and his great dignity” pg 28

“Fish,” he said, “I love you and respect you very much. But I will kill you dead before this day ends.” pg 19

Body Paragraph 3= Discuss the topic of PERSEVERANCE (Use your Week 11 Entry work) 2 quotations

These are the quotes i used for week 11

“All my life the early sun has hurt my eyes, he thought. Yet they are still good” pg 11

“Fish,” he said softly, aloud, “I’ll stay with you until I am dead.”pg 19

Body Paragraph 4= Pick a 4th topic from the following list devised in class. Support it with 1-3 quotations. Choices include:

• Fear

• Happiness

• Instinct/Survival

• Dedication

• Ego/Pride/Reputation

Body Paragraph 5= Pick a 5th topic from the list devised in class. Support it with 1-3 quotations.
(Humanity, Dedication, purpose, Destiny, Stubbornness, fearless)

Please note, here you *MAY* pick another topic to add, as a 6th paragraph, if you feel it would enhance your essay and more fully support your thesis–however it is not mandatory!
Conclusion= A mirror image of your Intro… Rephrase your thesis. Remind reader of the topics discussed in your body paragraphs. End on a philosophical note, leaving the reader with something to think about.

This is a 7 paragraph essay. Intro, Conc, and a required 5 body paragraphs.

In each body paragraph, you must thoroughly explain each quotation, and then demonstrate critical thinking by offering insight. Some helpful questions to elicit your analysis:

• What is really happening here, symbolically?

• Why is this important?

• What is the meaning of this on a grand scale?

• What is the author’s purpose in writing this?

• How does this contribute to or enhance the theme?

• What is this character’s flaw or weakness? What causes him to act in this way?

• What might the character be thinking, wishing, hoping for?

Double-spaced, 12 pt font, left-hand justified heading, original title, and a balanced treatment of the text, and your analysis of it.

This is your last writing! Please take care with it, as it is a reflection of you. It should be neat, organized, professional, and proofread! make sure you cite the quotes and add page number ( please try the best you can because its my final exam for english and i need a good grade )
