Project description
Choose any artwork and use what you have learned from this course to discuss it at length. In this paper you must include the following: The paper should be around 1000 words. Your paper must include images of the main work you have chosen to respond to with full image captions underneath them (artist, title, date, medium etc.) The work you choose can be of any medium: painting, sculpture, calligraphy, video, etc. You are encouraged to include references to other works of art, or images in order to supplement your discussion, but the primary focus of your discussion should be the single object and how it fits into to what has been studied throughout the course.
Goals
Before submitting your project, be sure to review each of these goals to make sure your project adheres and aligns to each. Use a spell and grammar check before submitting.
Write a focused and unified essay with effective word-choice and transitions between points.
Provide a well-developed balance of formal analysis and context (historical and art historical)
Anticipate reader’s need for information, explanation, and context
Write with correct sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Correctly cite sources in written work.
Include a discussion of what the work means to you personally, and what you have gained by examining the work closely.
Include a discussion of the historical context in which the artwork was made and how that informs the work of art.
Include a discussion on the genre to which the work belongs.
Provide examples of the artwork(s) in your project to ground your analysis (e.g., images, or other relevant samples of the artwork(s))you’re
Include a discussion of the iconography in the artwork, and how it informs the artwork.
Include a thorough formal analysis of the artwork(s).
Accurately incorporate art historical context and terminology.
Here’s a quick outline if you are looking for a formula…
1. What motivated you to choose the work of art
2. A formal analysis of the work of art – name everything!
3. A historical contextual analysis – Does the time it was painted in and the events that took place influence the artwork?
4. An art historical analysis – What other works of art does it resemble? Was the artwork an homage to an earlier time? Was it a reaction against a preceding art movement?
5. How did it affect you personally by thinking so deeply about the work of art?
