Vocational Interview
Other than sleep you are going to spend more time working than any other single activity in your life. Your college and career choices will have a profound impact on the quality of your life in a myriad of ways. Given this fact, it is concerning that so many college students make decisions concerning their majors and career trajectories without ever talking with someone in the field they aspire to join.
The goal of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to conduct a vocational interview with a professional in a field that you may be interested in. If you are interested in psychiatric nursing, find a psychiatric nurse who is working in the field and interview him or her. I have had students interview professional race car drivers, morticians, law enforcement, medical professionals, professional athletes, goat herders and vintners.
In his 1989 book, “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”, Stephen Covey outlined seven habits that were associated with successfully establishing and reaching personal and professional goals. His second habit was. “begin with the end in mind”. As a college student burdened with the day to day academic and personal responsibilities that are required to be successful, it is easy to lose track of the fact that what is waiting for you on the other side of your diploma is a job. Use this assignment to your advantage and keep the end in mind.

Conduct a vocational interview in person or by phone with an individual who you think has an interesting job or a job that you may be interested in pursuing yourself.
Turn the interview into a paper of five to six pages that summarized the key points of your interview.
Identify and use one external source for the paper such as from a book, journal or newspaper.
Use the four questions provided on this form and come up with four additional questions of your own.
Use an APA Format including a title page and bibliography
