Purpose: This individual paper is intended to facilitate the student’s development as a leader. It is designed to help students determine their role as a member of (and leader within) an inter-professional team. Students will identify their current leadership qualities, desired leadership qualities, and develop a plan to practice excellence, professional engagement, and lifelong learning. Process:
(1) Step One: Begin by articulating the value of pursuing practice excellence, professional engagement, and lifelong learning, and how these elements impact professional growth and development. Identify what actions you have taken up to this point in pursuing these three things.
(2) Step Two: In the nursing profession you are part of an inter-professional (interdisciplinary) team. Explain how you will advocate for high quality, safe patient care in your day-to-day functions within your current role; and, in a future role based on your professional aspirations.
(3) Step Three: As part of an inter-professional team, nurses rely on collaboration and teamwork to foster success. Identify at least two specific team-building strategies and two specific collaborative strategies that you feel you will use on a regular basis to ensure your success as a member of an inter-professional team.
(4) Step Four: Discuss what your future plans are for professional growth. Include continuing education, certifications, participation in professional organizations, participation in political processes and/or grassroot legislative efforts, and/or other ways in which you intend to pursue practice excellence, professional engagement, and lifelong learning.
(5) Step Five: Establish at least five specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-based (SMART) goals that you will work toward over the next five years.
