The Hyacinth Foundation, based in New Jersey and the largest
and first HIV service organization, embodies inclusion, professionalism, and
advocacy by demonstrating leadership commitment. Founded in 1985, the
organization’s mission changed from a death-focused organization designed to
assist individuals who are dying from HIV/AIDS to helping people with the
disease live healthy lives (Hyacinth Foundation, 2024). The Foundation’s
culture propels us forward by educating and preventing the spread of HIV
through wellness services and advocacy for marginalized populations. As a
social worker I’ve always been passionate about making a positive impact on
society
Hyacinth Foundation policies are developed with a set of
principles that help to promote workplace productivity. These include HIV/AIDS
education and prevention campaigns, the delivery and promotion of behavioral
health, and dealing with prejudice and hurdles to treatment (Hyacinth
Foundation, 2024). The Foundation practices culture sustainability for gay,
bisexual, trans sex, women and addicts. Thus, the main strategic objectives of
the Hyacinth Foundation include the following: lobbying for progressive legislation
with the goal of changing the situation at the legislative level and increasing
health literacy to make changes on the individual level. The Hyacinth
Foundation’s policies and culture embody the model of encouraging positive
change and creating long-term societal improvements which reflects much of my
professional vision, and values of my work as a professional working towards
social betterment and equality. According to the functionalist perspective in
sociology, all structures in society have a specific role in maintaining order.
They are reflected in the way the Hyacinth Foundation combines various
programs, including, but not limited to, health education, housing, and
psychosocial support as a holistic service delivery approach to support persons
with HIV (Ormerod, 2020). For example, their approaches towards offering
emergency cash and finding a home not only address the shortcomings of basic
needs but also positively affect the health of their clients, creating a
healthy population at large.
The interactionist perspective is focused on the day-to-day
contact between persons and the sense that is made of such contacts. In the
case of the Hyacinth Foundation, client-centered care and assistance are
evident from the following aspects (Ormerod, 2020). Some of the programs
include one-to-one and group therapy, and the LGBTQ drop-in centers show the
foundation values a client as an individual and is interested in their story.
For instance, self-administration fosters trust and personal responsibility for
health and lives. Therefore, it aligns with the interactionist perspective that
society comprises interactions and meanings people give them.
In conclusion, I find the Hyacinth Foundation’s culture and
policies to be coherent with my professional values and directly implement
sociological theories into practice. On one hand, their functionalist
perspective guarantees the normality and improved welfare of their clients by
providing wholistic services, for the other hand, Interactionist strategies
build rapport and support individuality in people in their community.
