Prewriting:  Literary Setting Essay
Complete the following prewriting activity in order to help you to develop content for your literary setting essay (Paper #2).
Briefly summarize the following stories, poems and plays that are listed below in one sentence each:
Miss Brill” (see Week Three Materials in the module)
“The Golf Links” (see Week Three Materials in the module)
“I stepped from plank to plank” (see Week Three Materials in the module)
“Sonny’s Blues” (see Week Three Materials in the module)
A Doll’s House (see Week Three Materials in the module)
Choose only two possible poems, stories or plays from the list above for your paper.   In three sentences, explain why you have chosen these literary works.
In 3 – 5 sentences, describe the author’s, poet’s or playwright’s use of the setting in the first literary work that you have chosen.  How does the setting drive the action and make the plot possible?  How does it impact the characters (if applicable)?  You may need to refer back to the literary works in the module and to the supplemental materials in order to answer this question.
In 3 – 5 sentences, describe the author’s, poet’s or playwright’s use of the setting in the second literary work that you have chosen.  How does it drive the action and make the plot possible?  How does it impact the characters (if applicable)?  You may need to refer back to the literary works in the module and to the supplemental materials in order to answer this question.
In 3 – 5 sentences, compare and contrast these two uses of the setting in both works of literature.  How are they alike and different?  Overall, how does it help us to interpret both literary works?   Include specific scenes from the story to support your points.
Include a clear thesis in one sentence that describes your topic and argument.  You may want to center your thesis statement around comparing and contrasting the use of the setting in both works to show how it makes the plot possible.  You will place this thesis at the end of your introductory paragraph when you begin writing your paper.
Include 1 – 2 quotes directly from the first literary work that you have chosen to support your points.
Include 1 – 2 quotes directly from the second literary work that you have chosen to support your points.
