Assume you are the program director of an EMS training center. One of your paramedic students was injured while on a field clinical ride-along. The student will miss approximately two months of class, which will delay his or her completion of their program. The student has contacted an attorney and is claiming the school was negligent in the training and practices.
Your dean has asked you to prepare a mitigation report on the steps needed to make sure that this situation does not occur again.
Your report to the dean should provide the specifics of the actions you will take within the program to prevent another injury from occurring, while providing the best environment for student success, whether in class or while students are on field rotations. You should present an insightful and thorough analysis with strong arguments and evidence. Some specifics the dean has asked for include a review of the following components:
the applicable content of the student handbook pertaining to risk and liability,
the orientation program for students,
the preceptor training program and its records,
practice of scheduling and assigning students to ride-sites and preceptors,
the emergency procedures that take place when a student is injured, and
the level of engagement of the medical director in the program.
The items you are reviewing are standard in most EMS education programs. You are encouraged to base your review and report on specific documentation from your current employer or local EMS facility. If this is not possible, you may base your report on the common standards you find in your research.
Your report should be a minimum of three pages in length, not counting the title and reference pages. All sources used should be properly cited. Your report, including all references, should be in APA style.
