May 4, 2024

Policymakers do not always understand the developmental and educational needs of young children. It is the job of the early childhood educator to advocate for the resources required to meet the needs of all students.
The Model Code of Ethics for Educators and the GCU Professional Dispositions of Learners prescribe that
educators should be knowledgeable about laws and policies and should be active advocates for the profession
and their students.
Part 1: Writing an Advocacy Letter
Research your state laws and policies affecting early childhood education to identify an issue related to one of
the following:
Early intervention
Development: Typical/Atypical
Child Find/Evaluations/Assessments
Policies/Procedures in early childhood
Write a one-page formal letter to your legislative representative advocating for a policy on your selected issue.
Include the following in your letter:
A brief introduction of yourself and your selected issue about early childhood education.
Description of a policy you would like your legislator to support regarding the issue or recommendations for   how your legislator can address your concerns.
A justification of why the issue is important, including a personalized statement on how the issue affects you  or is relevant to you.                                                                                                                                                                         Part 2: Reflection
In 500-750 words, reflect on the importance of advocacy and professionalism as an early childhood
How you plan to engage in informed advocacy for young children, families, and the profession to              optimize the learning opportunities for young children and advance the early childhood                                profession
How you plan to demonstrate the expectations of the early childhood profession by upholding ethical       standards, professional standards of practice, and relevant laws and policies
Why upholding ethical standards and observing laws and policies would be important for someone with a Christian worldview perspective
How your future advocacy work can ultimately benefit and support the developmental needs of all young children
educator. Include the following in your reflection:
