Policy practice: Advocacy Assignment (50% of Grade) What are the policy issue(s)

April 21, 2024

Policy practice: Advocacy Assignment (50% of Grade)
What are the policy issue(s) that most concern your group? Select a current issue(s) to examine for this project. ( I go to the University of Portland, in Oregon, so please do advocacy that’s from Oregon. Also, I am an international student-athlete, and my group is mostly minority, so choose something we can relate to.)
Your group will research the evolution of this issue from its emergence to the present. This will require an assessment of the current situation and a targeted review of relevant literature (social work & others). Note evidence in the literature supportive of your position.
·    Your group will select the proper venue for your advocacy. This may be a public hearing, legislative committee session, community forum, a meeting of a special commission that is authorized to deal with your issues such as a county board of commissioners, the regents of a university or community college, school board trustees, the planning commission of a unit of government, or the board of directors of a human service organization, or the general public. Do some background research on the nature of this venue and what are the expectations regarding presentations in this setting.
·    Your group will outline the key points of your advocacy and the goals you hope to achieve through your advocacy. Use the Policy Concept legislative form to organize your policy advocacy paper.
Your group will prepare a three (3) page of testimony (~750 words) in support of your constituents or cause and schedule a time on the agenda of the venue you selected above to present it. Distribute copies of your testimony to those hearing your presentation (i.e. the instructor and the class.–if you email to me I can make copies.)
Write a 1-page individual reflection on the impact or potential impact of this experience. Specifically, how did the assignment affect your personal professional growth and development, your view of the issue, and your perspective on the change process itself?
