According to Houser (2023), descriptive analysis contains certain measurement variables to summarize information involving sample research that does not include a large population. Descriptive analysis uses many ways to collect its data, such as measures of central tendency mean, median, and mode. It uses visual data sets such as bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs, and histograms (Houser, 2023). “Analysis of descriptive data entails using simple mathematical procedures or calculations, many of which are straightforward enough to be done with a calculator” (Houser, 2023, p. 283). Inferential analysis involves the sample in experiment. The sample is used to determine if the results represent the larger population involved in the experiment (Houser, 2023). Qualitative analysis requires the researcher to explore data from a different angle away from numbers and statistics. Houser 2023 noted, “As data are collected, they are reviewed and re-reviewed, and analytic memos are written” (p. 415). Quantitative analysis focuses on meaningful, purposeful data. Qualitative analysis is fascinating due to the extensive time it requires for data collection. “Researchers move back and forth among the processes of data collection, analysis, and concluding” (Houser, 2023, p. 415). With this method, research constantly changes questions or the observational method, depending on the experiment’s results (Houser, 2023). Data analysis is necessary for nurses to approach the nursing practice effectively, as it enables them to provide patient care.
According to Houser (2023), statistical significance determines if the results are real, and clinical significance determines whether the results are essential for the practices. Statistical significance is vital in ensuring the validity of study outcomes. In the context of my nursing practice, it is crucial that only accurate and reliable data is applied. Houser (2023) notes that “a change in practice should not be recommended if the researcher cannot demonstrate that the results are real—in other words, that the results are statistically significant. Change is also not warranted if the results are not important enough to warrant the effort to change a practice” (p. 354).
