FEMA has several responsibilities when disaster occurs as well as preparedness for disaster. FEMA provides guidance to communities to help them better prepare for disasters, as well as assist in training individuals to better prepare them for emergencies. They are also responsible for response to disasters and emergencies, such as search and rescue. They also aid in providing shelter for people who may loose their homes due to natural disasters. FEMA can also assist financially with grants and loans for families that have been affected by disasters. For example, FEMA helped tremendously in the recovery from the California wildfires. “As FEMA, we’ve worked with the state of California to approve several fire management assistance grants to help supplement the steep monetary costs of fighting the many fires across California and provide funding for additional man power” ( FEMA, 2017). Additionally, American Red Cross is also responsible with assisting in recovery for individuals that are injured due to the wildfires. FEMA has a page in their website that tells people how to best be prepared for wildfires. For example, “Have a “go-bag” ready with a change of clothes, a flashlight, cash, extra prescriptions, and any other supplies you may need. Keep your gas tank at least half-full in case you have to get out of the area quickly, with not a lot of time to spare” (FEMA, 2017). FEMA is an incredibly important resource that we have to keep the community safe.

How did FEMA help people prepare for the disaster?
In California,
FEMA’s preparation for the storm disaster was indirect. Following the disaster
declaration, FEMA provided resources to state and local government, to promote
disaster preparation and recover. Since the storm moved fast, FEMA did not
issue specific warning. However, as part of the FEMA’s general preparations,
materials were made available to people facing the storm, which is in line with
the promotion of safety during a disaster and ensuring that the response is
right to mitigate damages associated with storms (FEMA (2024a). As such,
Californian residents benefitted from the resources that FEMA provided.
What
services did FEMA provide to the community?
Following the
California disaster declaration, FEMA provided individual Assistance to San
Diego residents facing storms and flooding. (National City California, 2024).
The flood and storm victims assessed information about shelter places,
emergency contact, repairs, and foods as they sheltered the storms. Besides,
the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program offered funding to the entire state for
long-term hazard mitigation projects.
Who else
participated in the disaster relief efforts?
The California
Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) played a key role in the
disaster. As a state government, the presence in helping disaster victims is
critical. Moreover, FEMA officials had to coordinate with the local government
to ensure a streamlined response (FEMA (2024b). The involvement of the local
government was commendable because of their understanding of the people and the
ability to provide information vital to responders. The storm and flooding
attracted voluntary organizations and non-profits (National City California,
2024). These people worked alongside FEMA and local agencies to help in
disaster response and recovery.
