Please submit the final draft of Paper #1 (rhetorical analysis) here in a Microsoft Word document only.
-It should be two full pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font.
-Your final draft should include a clear introduction with a thesis, body paragraphs that address the thesis and a concluding paragraph.
-The paper must be written in MLA format with two quotes from the article that you have chosen and a works cited page.
In order to make the necessary revisions for your final draft, please refer to the comments that I have made in your rough draft. Complete the following prewriting activity in order to help you to develop content for your rhetorical analysis.
Summarize all four articles listed below in one sentence each.
“Go Ahead: Waste Time on the Internet” on pages 582 – 586 in They Say, I Say.
“It Turns Out Our Tech Gadgets Aren’t as Isolating as Experts Say” on pages 593 – 596 in They Say, I Say.
“How Smartphones Hijack Our Minds” on pages 597 – 604 in They Say, I Say.
“Social Media:  The Screen, the Brain, and Human Nature” on pages 607 – 612 in They Say, I Say.
Write one point from each article that stood out to you (either positive or negative.)
In 3 – 5 sentences, describe which article you would like to write about for your paper.  Why did you choose this article?
Based upon the author’s biography at the beginning of the article, is the author qualified to write about the topic?  Does the author need more experience?  Is the article only opinion-based?  Please respond in at least two sentences.
Is the article persuasive?  Can readers relate to what the author is saying?  Does the author use personal examples?  Please respond in at least two sentences.
Are statistics or outside research evident with citations?  Does the article seem to be supported by evidence?  Please respond in at least two sentences.
Include at least two possible quotes from the article to support your answers to questions 4 – 6.

Paper #1: Rhetorical Analysis
Consider the last four articles that we have read and discussed as a class. Write a two-page
rhetorical analysis of only one of the four articles of your choice:
1. “Go Ahead: Waste Time on the Internet” on pages 582 – 586 in They Say, I Say.
2. “It Turns Out Our Tech Gadgets Aren’t as Isolating as Experts Say” on pages 593 – 596
in They Say, I Say.
3. “How Smartphones Hijack Our Minds” on pages 597 – 604 in They Say, I Say.
4. “Social Media: The Screen, the Brain, and Human Nature” on pages 607 – 612 in They
Say, I Say.
In your paper, you will need to address the author’s ethos, pathos and logos in at least one
paragraph each.
When addressing the ethos, you will look at the author’s credibility. Based upon the
author’s biography at the beginning of the article, is the author qualified to write about
the topic? Does the author need more experience? Is the article only opinion-based?
When addressing the pathos, you will examine the emotional appeal of the article. Is it
persuasive? Can readers relate to what the author is saying? Does the author use
personal examples?
When addressing the logos, consider the logic of the argument. Are statistics or outside
research evident with citations? Does the article seem to be supported by evidence?
In addition, you will need to cite from your chosen article at least twice. This entire
paper should appear in MLA format only. The article that you have chosen will be your
only source, so you do not need to find any additional outside sources. Be sure to briefly
introduce your quote, state your quote and briefly explain why you have included the
quote. After your quote, you will need to include the page number of the article in
parentheses.
Furthermore, provide a works cited page with the complete citation information. The
Little Seagull Handbook provides examples of how to cite articles from anthologies.
Here is how your paper should be structured:
I. Introduction (3-5 sentences) Include an attention-grabber, background info and a clear
thesis with your topic and argument.
