Please select a prominent nationally or internationally circulated print publication, either a newspaper or magazine, and research its history.
Then, write an essay of at least 500 words. Please compose the essay as a double-spaced Word document. Assignment submissions in other formats are not accepted for credit.
Begin with a title page at the front of your document showing the correct assignment title, the course name, your name, and the date consistent with APA format for title pages. Do not use font larger than 12-point, please. Follow the guidelines for essay title pages as shown in The Center for Writing Excellence (linked below).
Start the body of the paper’s narrative with a paragraph to introduce the topic and preview what the paper will cover. This introductory paragraph gets the reader “up to speed” with the topic and the key points being addressed.
Then, follow with an essay focusing on the history of your selected nationally or internationally circulated publication and the evolution of that type of medium.
When was the publication first published?
Who founded the publication and where was it first published?
Who was the original intended audience?
How has the content (e.g., photos, articles, advertisements) changed over time?
How widely circulated is this publication? Publications with more readership tend to have greater impact.
What impact, if any, has the publication had on American culture? How do you know this for sure?
What are your predictions for how the publication will survive or advance in the future?
Conclude the narrative of the essay with a paragraph or so that summarizes the key points of your paper. Tell why this information is important for people who want to understand the impact of a particular print publication on society.
Cite at least two references to support your ideas. These references should align with specific examples of how media have influenced culture in the past 50 years or so. List the sources on a References page at the end of the assignment submission. APA format in-text reference citations are required.
