Don Warrick and Tom Donovan developed the initial list of these skills for an article they wrote back in 1979 for the Training and Development Journal. Don was from Colorado Springs and I met him out here in Colorado back in the early 90s.
I got his permission to use his list for an OD Workshop I designed, developed and delivered to local chapter members of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD–now ATD or Association for Talent Development) and the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI). Two of us delivered this two-day workshop in at least 12 major US cities including San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas, Portland (OR), Plano (TX), Orlando, Tucson and a few other places.
I adapted the list a few years ago adding the column on Technical Skills and I probably doubled the lists of skills for the other categories. I need to review the Technical Skills section and add to that with our increasing technologies. I’ve provided this list for a number of classes I’ve taught at a couple of universities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
As you review this list, I would ask you how confident and how competent you believe you are in these categories. How can you build an action plan to leverage your strengths and build your weaknesses into more strengths? Please keep in mind that EVERYONE has relative strengths and weaknesses.
