May 1, 2024

Please review the Taking a Position Template and requirements posted last week in the weekly Module. The topic you select for this project is entirely up to you!
Main requirements (others have been discussed in the Lecture Notes in previous weeks):
800-1,000 word minimum
Be sure to have someone review your essay and provide you with feedback prior to finalizing the essay.
MLA format (including proper format for sources listed on the Works Cited page (separate page at end of essay), plus the use of in-text citations to give credit to source material and avoid plagiarism.
Avoid using first person voice. This will help you maintain objectivity in examining your chosen issue.
Ensure you clearly state the essay’s position in a specific thesis and support it throughout your essay, and summarize it in your conclusion.
Maintain a respectful tone and acknowledge that the other side makes good points; discuss those points.
Be sure you properly quote material from sources and use in-text citations where needed so that your paper is not indicated as plagiarized by Turnitin.
Requires at least two sources from the TCC online library, one additional source, and at least one interview. All four of these should be listed properly in MLA format on the Works Cited page.
Add your personal interview summary/summaries after the Works Cited page on a separate page.
No PowerPoint is due for this project.
The Key Components of a Position Argument
THE PARTS OF A POSITION ARGUMENT
Claim
Supporting Arguments
Counter-arguments
Evidence
The Claim – In this essay, your goal is to present a credible, persuasive argument for adoption of a specific position on a topic of interest. In other words, you will be using research to support a thesis that advocates for what you believe is the best position to take on a topic and explains the validity of that viewpoint. You will present your claim as an argumentative thesis statement in the introduction of the essay.  The following interactive video will help you understand what it takes to create an argumentative claim.

Supporting Arguments – You will need to show your reader why supporting your claim is valid in the body of the essay.  These supporting arguments will need to make clear points that back up the position, and will need to use evidence from relevant research to adequately illustrate the validity of these points.  The following video provides examples of how to coordinate supporting points with evidence to construct a strong position argument.

Counter-Argument and Rebuttal – You will need to acknowledge the opposing side in this essay to build credibility with the reader.  Giving voice to the counter-argument will allow you the opportunity to show you are aware of the controversy, and allow you to rebut this issue.  The following video explains counter-arguments and rebuttal strategies that you will be able to use in your own essay.

Evidence – In this essay you will use evidence found through research from beginning to end.  Evidence will be your starting point, and you will develop your understanding of the various viewpoints on the issue you choose by learning how others in society see and feel about it (your topic and claim).  This evidence and evidence gained through further research will then help you craft the position for which you will argue, and you will incorporate this information into the body of your essay (supporting arguments).  Research will also provide you with information that will let you present the opposing arguments fully, as well as craft solid rebuttals or refutations of them (counter-argument and rebuttal).   Clearly, then, evidence is one of the most significant elements of this type of essay. You will gain credibility and confidence from reliable evidence, and so you should carefully review all of the information you find through research.  The following video provides tips for how to review research for credibility that will lead to the best use of evidence in your essay.
