According to Reichenberg & Seligman (2016), “we must be knowledgeable about what helps and what has the potential for causing our clients to get worse” (Reichenberg, L.W., & Seligman, L. 2016. p 2). A specific set of criteria must be met to determine one’s diagnosis. Before a diagnosis can be determined, a proper assessment must be completed. The assessment should entail detailed information about the client that you can utilize when selecting the appropriate diagnosis and configuring a treatment plan. As social workers, we must incorporate effective listening and support to our clients as we complete the assessment. This is where we will get the information needed to configure the client’s next best steps and help establish a rapport. A goal of social workers is to provide effective treatment to clients and to assist them with getting back to doing things that they once enjoyed.
