Please read the instructions carefully.
Research project worksheet a Download worksheet a and worksheet b Download worksheet b are due by midnight, May 16, 2024.
Your job for the research project is to do the work of an historian. I want you to look through Ebony Magazine from the year 1965 for your research. Research projects that use other years will not be accepted. The magazine can be found in the library or online here:
https://books.google.com/books?id=PtMDAAAAMBAJ&source=gbs_all_issues_r&cad=1&atm_aiy=1960#all_issues_anchor
You do not have to go through every page of every issue of your year to do this assignment. You do not have to start in January and do your research in chronological order. You can use more than one issue (month), but those issues must be from the year 1965. If you use Ebony materials from other years, you will receive an F.
You need to find 3 articles, 2 photos (non-advertisements), and 2 advertisements related to your topic (7 documents total) from the year you are working with. For the photos, these can come from an article you are writing about or even the magazine cover. Sometimes, no author or photographer is listed. On the worksheet, just write, “no photographer listed” or “no author listed.”
To guide your research, select one of the following topics for your research:
Race relations
Gender roles
The economy (work/careers, housing, technology, consumerism, business, or a combination of these)
Culture and identity
Violence and inequality
Politics and power
You decide which historical topic to research, but focusing on one topic will allow you to construct a successful thesis statement and catchy title. Whichever topic you select, you need to do the following: Find three articles, two photos, and two advertisements that relate to that topic. Most students find it easiest to take a screenshot or photo of the materials. Or take good notes. You do not need to include your photos or screenshots of your research in your worksheets.
When you do this research, BE SURE TO KEEP A RECORD OF THE DATE (MONTH/YEAR) AND PAGE NUMBER OF YOUR MATERIALS SO YOU CAN PROPERLY CITE THEM. One goal of archival research is to share your sources with other scholars so they can follow up on the work you have done and this requires that you provide them with proper citations.
For the write up of this assignment, you need to do two things. Use your seven documents to fill in worksheet a.
The second part of the assignment (worksheet b) is to write up your findings by developing a thesis statement, a title, and analytical paragraphs. Your thesis statement is the big, overarching argument about your research findings. This is NOT a research paper, but instead a research analysis project. To complete the assignment, submit both worksheets in Canvas. I (and Canvas) prefer Microsoft Word documents. If you use Pages or Google Docs, please convert your worksheets into Microsoft Word documents before submitting them. Do not provide a Google link to your worksheets.
Some things to keep in mind. Do not do “extra” research for the assignment, that is to say, don’t check out 5 books from a library on race relations or politics in the 1960s. Do NOT use material from the internet. You do not need a bibliography or works cited page.
When you are done, upload your two documents through Canvas on the assignment page. You do not need to send me copies/images of your documents.
If you borrow the ideas, facts, or words of someone else, even if you paraphrase, you must cite them. For Ebony material, use (Ebony, April 1965, page 44) or class readings use (Zinn, page 435). If in doubt, cite your source. Improper citation can produce an F. This project must be your own work. Plagiarism, cheating, and AI generated content will generate an F for the assignment and disciplinary action.
