WEEKLY MEDIA “MINI”-PRESENTATIONS: 25%*
Once per week we will ask at least one student to bring in a news media piece
(on-line news, newspaper, blogs, YouTube, etc.) that relates to the topic of
“Global Poverty.” My first choices for choosing reliable information are the New
York times, Washington Post and any other news outlet that publishes/reports
objective information. The article and source must be vetted for researched
information by the writer, not just opinions. These students will present their
summary of their relevant and current news story (from any chosen media source
and/or format) and synthesize it with the readings and lectures from class and
other materials found by the students to connect the subject to global poverty.
This can be trade journals and other information that can be used to back-up the3

focus of the presentation. The students will make their presentation individually
on a different article related to the subject and as the backdrop for the session
that week in a PowerPoint format. We will use these media pieces to launch our
discussion for that week. Each presentation should not be more than 20 minutes
for each student.
Please note: this course will be VERY interactive and students will be expected
to engage with the instructor and each other and use their voices to practice
articulating new ideas and thoughts. Our primary goal is to maintain a collective
space for our intellectual energy to live and grow. Our other goals are not to be
more/most “correct” and/or “right,” “louder” and/or “better” than others are. We
are in community, and we accept and honor this responsibility and commitment.
Here is an example of a current and relevant media topic:
