Please read the entire novel, according to the requirements of the title, complete the paper, the paper must be more than 1700 words. The novel is AUGUST WILSON’s Fences.
Requirements of this essay:
Prompt:
Much of Fences is dedicated to the literal and figurative building of fences. By the end of the play, the fence around the Maxson home is complete, but many of the figurative fences that existed between characters and worlds have been torn down. Write about one or two metaphorical fences you observed the characters build or grapple with and then tear down. Why and how was the fence built? What causes the fence to crumble?
Note: Don’t take the words ‘tear down” and “crumble” to represent something negative. The destruction of a fence can result in connection and expansion. Also, if there’s another idea you have and would like to focus on in your essay, let me know.
This essay should be 5 pages and submitted using standard MLA format (the Works Cited page would be your 6th page). Use evidence from the text to support your ideas. If you write about societal issues of the time, it would be a good idea to use outside sources (articles, etc.) as evidence.
Please complete the thesis according to the following ideas. Please note that the thesis statement must be written clearly.
Thesis according:I want to write my essay as Troy constantly encounters setbacks and contradictions, but he keeps growing and repairing. However, I will write down the bad influence brought by each repair and the cost of his mistakes. Finally, I will constantly dismantle and rebuild the wall through metaphor, telling everyone that every step of walking has a cost. Especially in the era of injustice described by Wilson, if people who are already suffering from injustice want to resist, they have to bear a greater price. It also takes the opportunity to hint at the dark background of the strong racial discrimination of the time.
Here is a sample of thesis statement:
Troy and Rose desire a fence around their home for different reasons. While not on the same page about the physical fence, Troy and Rose’s dishonesty with each other helps them work together on a metaphorical fence that serves to create increasing distance between them. Once
they’re faced with the truth, the fence crumbles, leaving them to deal with the ruins of the relationship they once knew, and a chance to see each other for who they really are and create
a much different connection that eventually results in reconciliation for the entire family.
Essay reminders:
When quoting from the play, use author’s last name (when necessary) and page numbers, NOT the numbers for acts, scenes, and lines. For example:
Quote – Troy says, “that boy ain’t working down there. He lying to me” (Wilson 49).
Paraphrase – Troy tells the family that Cory is lying about still working at A&P (Wilson 49).
Quote – Wilson writes, “He finishes his dance and the gates of heaven stand open as wide as God’s closet” (101).
If you’re quoting dialogue, try to incorporate it as you would regular quoted or paraphrased sentences. However, if you need to quote uninterrupted dialogue, that’s fine; just try to limit how many times you do it, and the length of each dialogue. Dialogue also requires a different format:
When quoting dialogue from a play, begin each part with the appropriate character’s name indented 1-inch from the left margin and written in all capital letters followed by a period. Then, start the quotation and indent all subsequent lines of a particular quote an additional ¼ inch.
Also, for the Works Cited page, you will use MLA book format for the play, since we’re reading it in book form; and when you type Fences, the title, it should always appear in italics.
