Annotated Bibliography Assignment
Students are required to complete an annotated bibliography using 10 scholarly sources on one topic in the field of constitutional politics. Scholarly sources include refereed journals
articles or book chapters. Your annotated bibliography assignment may focus on either
a domestic or international issue. You decide which issue to focus on. For those of you who are unsure what area you are interested in, you might want to consider one of the following
topics for your annotated bibliography:
one aspect of the constitution (such as freedom of expression)
Indigenous Peoples and the constitution
the use of the courts to effect constitutional change
the nature and role of treaties in the constitution of Canada
disability rights as an equality right under the constitution
one aspect of the role of religion in the law (such as the right to wear a
niqab while testifying in a criminal matter).
Your annotated bibliography should include:
1) Introduction
In one paragraph (approximately 1/2 a page), describe why you decided to focus on
your topic or issue. Explain its significance and why it is an important matter for
scholars
in the field of law & politics to address.
2) Proper Citations
Please ensure that each entry in your assignment must uses a bibliography citation.
The “Notes and Bibliography: Sample Citations” webpage of the Chicago Manual of
Style On-Line has examples of what proper citations look like if you are uncertain.
3) Analysis
Each entry in the annotated bibliography should be approximately 300 words. The two sentences should summarize what the article focused on and its primary findings. The
remainder of the entry should provide an analysis of the primary strength and the
primary weakness of the article.
