Hello! this is a very important paper. I am talking about how gaslighting is shown through compulisive lying, deflection and exploitation of your weaknesses in the book 1984 and right now I ONLY need the body paragraphs and YOU HAVE TO USE THESE QUOTES and take some of the information I wrote under it. Card #3 “Sexual intercourse was to be looked on as a slightly disgusting minor operation, like having an enema.” (Orwell 69)
This quote explains how their parties’ rules were: they think of “sexual intercourse” as more as a job for creating people, not for pleasure. They have invaded all and even the most private parts of their lives by controlling them and peer pressure through thought control. So most of the people there are punished if they see it as anything other than a task that needs to be done.

Card #1 “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” (Orwell 4)
These words are used multiple times throughout the book in a way to show the party’s power against the people. While it does not say exactly if Big Brother is an actual person or not, we do understand that the things the party is saying are completely out of proportion in a normal society.

Card #4 “She did not understand that there was no such thing as happiness, that the only victory lay in the far future, long after you were dead, that from the moment of declaring war on the Party it was better to think of yourself as a corpse. ‘We are the dead,’ he said.” (Orwell 137)
This quote is showing that most of the people in this society have no concept of any other type of living ,except by the rules they have to follow. They are constantly being lied to and made to think that they are less worthy than they are.

Card #5 “The terrible thing that the Party had done was to persuade you that mere impulses, mere feelings, were of no account, while at the same time robbing you of all power over the material world.” (Orwell 165)
This quote is a great example of how mentally brutal the party was. Besides the occasional physical harm/punishment the Party gives to the people, the most intense harm is the mental punishments they receive. Forced to believe that they have nothing worth living for, except being “perfect” for society.

Card #12 “I understand HOW: I do not understand WHY.” (Orwell 80)
In this quote we see that Winston is aware of how the past is altered, but he is struggling on WHY Big Brother would feel the need to alter history in the first place. To maintain population and maintain control over the future, Big Brother manipulates the past. presenting Big Brother in a favorable light at all times. Winston just wants to know why and realizing that something is off

Card #7 “For the first time he perceived that if you want to keep a secret you must also hide it from yourself.” (Orwell 283)
This quote is a great example of how the Party has gotten so many people to think that living certain ways or having certain thoughts that are not what the Party agrees with is WRONG. The thought police, hidden mics, telescreens, Big Brother signs are all ways that the Party gets inside their minds to the point where they can’t even hide a secret from themselves.

Card #15 “The past was dead, the future was unimaginable.” (Orwell 28)
This quote, although might not seem too super out of the norm, but in reality this has a way deeper meaning. In their society the past or anyone who disagrees with the party’s rules were completely ‘vaporized’. And the future in this society was truly unimaginable. Even thinking about doing something wrong could get you killed or something bad will happen to you mysteriously.

Card #11 “If there is hope, wrote Winston, it lies in the proles.” (Orwell 72)
While this quote doesn’t show gaslighting itself, it shows us that they are important because Orwell used them as a way of showing the problems with being not involved in politics and remaining ignorant. They are constantly distracted by entertainment from the world’s problems. They are unaware of the Party’s oppression, so they are not considered a threat. They also live in poverty and work manual labor jobs. (The human-like) characters in the novel.

Card #10 “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.” (Orwell 74)
This quote is important because we understand that it implies that they are powerless to rebel against their forced way of life unless they realize there is a problem with it. But until people have something to compare it to and realize that things can be different, which can only occur after an awakening when things start to change, they won’t be able to see that something is wrong with it.

Card #8 “What was more important was that sexual privation induced hysteria, which was desirable because it could be transformed into war fever and leader worship.” (Orwell 134)
This quote shows another way the Party controls their people through certain rules. The Party wants to turn the excess energy into ”war-fever”, so that it can be used against the Party’s enemies

Card #2 “‘Who controls the past’, ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.'” (Orwell 37)
This quote explains that whoever is in charge and in control, has the power to change anything that doesn’t follow the rules or the social norms in the book. We see lots of instances where people are having their memories swiped or having people completely disappear and it was like they never even existed.

Card #14 “The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” (Orwell 80)
This quote is explaining how the Party’s manipulation is so severe that even the littlest thing like telling someone not to remember what they heard or saw, is their “norm”. This shows the party’s manipulation of truth and reality, encouraging citizens to deny their own perceptions and just follow along.

Using your weakness against you
Card #9 “Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don’t care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!” (Orwell 289)
This quote shows that the Party used Winstons weakness (his fear of rats) against him to show their higher power. At first, Winston accepts the torture in a sad state of abandonment, holding onto his love for Julia as the last untouched part of his self. The Party wants to completely eliminate Winston’s sense of self, not only persuade him to confess or retract.
Using your weakness against you
Card #6 “It was like swimming against a current that swept you backwards however hard you struggled, and then suddenly deciding to turn round and go with the current instead of opposing it. Nothing had changed except your own attitude; the predestined thing happened in any case.” (Orwell 280)
This quote explains that each person is manipulated so badly, that the mind is tricked into thinking that what is happening to them is okay. From the constant pressure and threats against them, it is less physical/mental damage if they just go with it and follow along. Which is a sad way to live
Using your weakness against you
Card #13 “Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.” (Orwell 219)
This quote is explaining that power is not a means, it is an end. “Power is inflicting pain and humiliation.” The party uses their power not in a good way, but in a way that only really benefits them.
