Paper Goal: This final paper is the essay assignment of a topic that captures a security issue of any Central Asian country, including Afghanistan or the entire region. The paper should provide the social, economic, and political context of the issue to better map the causes of the insecurity and conflict. Make sure you select one specific issue and discuss it in detail. Through this paper you can discuss both traditional and non-traditional security issues. It requires you to use all that you have learned in order to produce a refined piece of information and rhetorical criticism. In the process of completing this assignment, you should be able to: · Provide a background information/history about the topic you write · Explain the context and content through evidence and references · Discuss the reasoning and justification of the thesis of your argument · Advance and defend an insightful interpretation of the materials covered throughout the course · Conclude your argument by a policy recommendation (particularly if you view the issue as a problem that impedes security in a particular country or Central Asia region)
Format This paper must be 10 pages double-spaced (excluding bibliography) with 1-inch margins, and should use APA style citations, and Times New Roman 12-point font. This paper has 30 points and should include the following sections. Introduction (5 points) In this section, you should begin with the title of your topic, the main question, and the issues that you discuss throughout the paper. Explain why you think this topic is relevant to security. You should also state your thesis; what are you examining, and why is this topic worth studying? Description (6 points) In this section you should discuss the historical background of the issue/topic that you are examining. You should also discuss the factors that caused the issue/problem to emerge. This section should discuss in detail the different dynamics of the topic you are studying. Analysis (7 points)
As you are making an argument for your interpretation, you should use evidence from the literature/report to back up your analytical claims. There is no standard way of organizing this section since it will depend heavily on the nature of your evidence and study. As you discuss your findings and analyze those findings, you are generally doing two things: proving that the finding exists and explaining what the finding means for your critique/analysis. Conclusion & Policy Recommendations (7 points) The section should include a summary of your argument and the policy recommendations. I encourage creativity in this section; propose 3-4 policy recommendations, accompanied by their respective pros and cons. Sources (2 points) The paper must include a “References” section to document the literature you consulted. Make sure you use at least 10 scholarly journal articles or books; the rest can be media and Internet sources. You should use APA citation style in both text and bibliography. Please do not use long quotations – try to cite outside sources and put ideas into your own words. Consistency & Clarity (3 points) The essay will be graded based on the content (clear and detailed understanding of the “topic question/s, problem, description, analysis, and conclusion/policy recommendations) and organization (citations, creativity, grammar and spelling). Please proofread your paper before submission on the due date.
