RE: Discussion – Week
Characteristics of the Approach
I chose to examine a qualitative research article that used Grounded Theory as it’s approach. This approach seeks to “discover or construct theory from data, systematically obtained and analyzed using comparative analysis” (Chun Tie, Birks & Francis, 2019). Selecting a research design or approach explains how the researchers plan to answer the research question they have posed. Once data is collected, a researching using this approach would code the data and begin to look for common themes and/or interrelated concepts. In this article, the researchers specify that they are looking at the “lived experiences of the participants who represent the phenomena of interest” (Kaya, et al., 2020). This approach informed the amount of participants in the study, the lens through which data is collected, and how it is interpreted.
Summary of the Article
The bystander effect is something that has been well researched, however these researchers chose to look at that model in relation to men’s stance within sexual violence prevention. They were most interested in understanding how to construct of masculinity plays a role in men’s decision to intervene or not. It’s important to understand the social norms which guide behavior for bystanders in these situations, and how to work toward changing these norms on a large scale. 15 participants were recruited through University of Maryland’s email and listserv systems, as well as groups on campus. Once selected they completed Student’s Intent to Intervene inventory, followed by semi-structured interviews. They ultimately found that there were 5 categories which influenced a male’s decision to intervene in the prevention of sexual assault. These included (a) exposure to training, (b) the role of alcohol, (c) social factors, (d) individual characteristics, and (e) masculine norms (Kaya, et al., 2020). These factors all influence each other as opposed to standing alone.
Crititque
Kaya, et al., (2020) do not specify in the form of a research question, but they do describe their goals of the study: (a) explore the social context in which the intervention occurred, including factors such as the social situation, and the individuals’ relationship with the perpe trator and victim; (b) delineate aspects of masculinity that contributed to men’s efficacy and willingness to engage in bystander behaviors; and (c) develop a theory that encapsulates the role of masculinity in men’s bystander intervention in situations of sexual violence. They provide a detailed overview of the social problem they are researching by providing context and history about the bystander model, statistics about both men and women intervening, and what past research, if any, has told them about what role masculinity plays in the decision for a male bystander to intervene. Although there was a lot of research in regards to the bystander model, they found that this was indeed the gap in the literature, and identified their purpose to “explore the role of masculinity and men’s gender role socialization on bystander behaviors among men who have acted as bystanders against sexual assault” (Kaya, et al., 2020). It was a bit difficult to determine who their participant population was. They mention that their participants must have been a student at the university, but they do not make it clear which university and why they chose that university. The researchers described thoroughly the processes they took once participants were selected and their procedure for data analysis. This included interviewing participants and asking them to complete standardized behavior inventories. Through coding and their data analysis they were ultimately able to identify common themes which they referred to as “categories”. The researchers maintained their connection to a Grounded Theory approach throughout the entire research article, including in the discussion where they stated that this was the first study on this particular topic using Grounded Theory and how that is adding to the scope of the literature and contributing to the ongoing prevention of sexual assault/abuse. Overall, this was a well written and thorough qualitative research article according to the R8360 Guidelines for Reading and Evaluating Qualitative Research Articles.

Main question post
Summary of approach
Qualitative research provides many different approaches. This week, an exploration of grounded theory was investigated. According to Patton (2015), the grounded theory allows for large quantities of data to be consolidated and builds on existing theory. The majority of qualitative approaches in research focus on the emergence of themes; however, a grounded approach focuses on analysis and processes (Patton, 2015).
Research article
Maramaldi, P., Sobran, A., Scheck, L., Cuasto, N., Lee, I., White, E., & Cadet, T. J. (2014). Interdisciplinary medical social work: A working taxonomy. Social Work in Health Care, 53(6), 532-551. https://doi.org/10.1080/00981389.2014.905817
Marmaldi et al. (2014) conducted a research study to understand the competencies medical social workers should possess when working in an interdisciplinary team. An action research design was completed to understand social workers’ perceptions working in an interdisciplinary team in an acute care (hospital) setting (Marmaldi et al., 2014). As the study was an exploratory study, the data collection methods surrounded reviewing past research and case reviews (Marmaldi et al., 2014). Marmaldi et al. (2014) found that social workers working in an interdisciplinary team in a hospital setting allows social workers to cultivate their clinical skills and other disciplines need to understand social workers contributions specifically when it comes to cultural competence, crisis negotiations, and specific interventions.
Critique based off R8360 Guidelines for reading and evaluating qualitative research articles
1. Marmaldi et al. (2014) clearly state the interest of the phenomenon and distinctly propose the research question. The research question provides specific target group as “social workers” and interdisciplinary teams in acute care settings. Appropriate qualitative terminology is utilized as Marmaldi et al. (2014) are researching perceptions.
2. The title of the article reflects qualitative based on “a working taxonomy”.
3. The authors justify the social problem surrounding social workers and their skills working with patients. The discussion of past research was well done for limited frames of reference.
4. The purpose is aligned with the research problem as the research problem is parallel to the purpose.
5. The approach is identified during the explanation of the purpose of the study.
6. The authors provided significant information on the data collection method and how the panel was selected.
7. The article did not describe in detail how the panel was selected to review case studies nor was the informed consent process detailed.
8. As it was an exploratory study, the research data collection was outlined as case studies were reviewed and the panel met to discuss and reflect on social worker responsibilities.
9. The data collection analysis was defined and broken down into multiple sections for explanations of each social work competency evaluated.
10. Although not specifically labeled as “Results”, the results were included with analysis and findings.
11. The discussion of limitations provided a brief synopsis of how the study needs further research.
12. The authors did provide a detailed conclusion of what was being researched, the results of the research, and the limitations for further research.
