PROMPT
Examples/Expository Essay on SHOPPING
What does the expository essay do? It makes a point and supports that point with examples.
BACKGROUND INFO: Recently we watched videos and film and read essays and articles that use personal examples to make a very important point, to satisfy their text’s purpose, to fulfill their thesis. Each of these sources helps us to recognize the complexity of shopping or consumerism.
General consensus shows that people generally try to achieve happiness in the following areas by shopping and acquiring things they deem necessary or nice to have. They often opt to shop instead of pursuing other joys in life, such as: being in nature, spending time with family and friends, learning something new, reflecting and relaxing, having a pet, living in a beautiful environment, practicing generosity and kindness, doing work that is meaningful, getting exercise, fighting negative thoughts, etc.
TOPIC & REQUIREMENTS: In a 3-4 page essay, explain what consumerism means to you and your personal context such as friends, family, community, etc. Does this kind of consumerism correspond to the versions we have been learning about via films, video, readings?
1. For this essay, you will explore the topic of consumerism as you know and observe it in your own community [family, friends, neighbors, relatives, girlfriend, etc..] and present concrete examples to show the point you want to make. This is a broad topic, and you will need to select a specific for your thesis. Think about some of the resources we have discussed so far and let them help you understand and discuss shopping on a deeper level.
2. You must use at least one of the sources we have discussed in class and/or that are on the resources list, and use it in ways that strengthen and support the points you make in your essay.
3. Write in the first person only as necessary, keeping in mind that the purpose of this essay is academic and not to tell a story: Describe, explain, think about, analyze, deliberate, conclude, etc—share your observations on how your group views and practices shopping, and let the reader really understand and think critically the situations you refer to.
Where do I get my information?
Observe and notice, ask specific questions of your focus group. What role does shopping play in the lives of your family, yourself, or your group of friends. What do you tend to buy the most? How often do you shop? Tell us where you shop, how you decide what to buy, whetherthese activities tend to be social outings or not, any patterns that you have noticed about how you all/each think about shopping. Apart from the activities, what thoughts, ideas, values seem to shape your shopping activities? [“you know what I want one day?….”]:
o Are people in your community shopping more easily these days than in their past, or the opposite? In what ways?
o Are you or people you know or your family generally satisfied with what you buy and the cost?
o How do you decide what to buy, where and when?
o What impact does your shopping have on your finances?
o What are your thoughts about shopping as an environmental or human rights issue?
o How do you think about shopping in general?
✓ What are your thoughts about the amount of shopping you do? [ex: “to my family/ my friend/ me, shopping is important because….; these are some of the things that motivate us to shop…”
✓ “ these are some other activities that we do more [or less] than shopping or thinking or talking about owning things– ex: shopping, family time, time alone, quiet time, big social, groups, certain kinds of outings, hobbies, etc]
Strategy: To generate content , think back, ask someone to refresh your memory, visualize, brainstorm, map, list, describe, tell the story of. Expect to write about 7-8 pages of pre-writing and you will keep maybe about 2 pages of writing…. [Content: the what of the essay]
• Length: 3-4 pages, double-spaced, 1” margins all around, font Times 12, Calibri or Arial 11
