3. On December 21, 2018, the USDA released the final rule on the GMO labeling legislation that was passed in 2016. Companies will have to comply with the rule beginning January 1, 2022.
The bill does not require companies to disclose if highly refined ingredients such as sugars and oils come from BE or GMO processes. Foods derived from animals are also exempt. Future methods of BE and genetic modification such as CRISPR-CAS9 and RNAi are also excluded (summary of USDA final rule, 12/21/2018). Opponents of the rule argue that many genetically modified foods will be excluded from mandatory labeling due to these loopholes. Use the links below for information to help with the discussion.
