Do not over-quote. I am interested in your voice, not the
voice of whichever authority you are using.
I do not want to read a paper that is one quote after another. Put ideas into your own words. As a
general rule of thumb, do not use more than two quotes per paper.
“Prove” is a bad word. In
psychology, we do not “prove” hypotheses, we support them. Conversely, sometimes hypotheses are not
supported. Try to eradicate black and
white thinking and learn to think in color, in the realm of possibility. Go through every paper and remove any
sentence that contains any variation of “prove” and replace with the
appropriate variation of “support”. If you write that an experiment “proved” a
certain hypothesis or theory, I will lower your paper by two letter grades.
Bigger isn’t always better. I am
not impressed with big words. Do not
throw big words around just to impress your reader. Use the best
word, the word that provides the most clarity, rather than the word with
the most syllables. Words matter, they
are the window to your thoughts. I
should not read a paper and struggle to determine what you mean by certain
words, instead, your words should provide a bright white spotlight so that I
can easily follow your train of thought.
Simple words trump complex words if they convey your meaning best. Similarly, overly long and complex sentences
can muddle meaning. You may need to use
short simple sentences to convey your thoughts in the most precise way.
Exaggeration is for politicians, not scientists. Do not
exaggerate. Do not try to make a finding
more important than it is, for a result to mean more than it does. Save overblown language for a novel, not a
paper for this class. Strive for
accuracy.
Resist the temptation to lengthen. Avoid
filler. Each one of your sentences
should be necessary for your paper. Do
not add sentences to make your paper longer.
I do not grade on the basis of paper length. I will, however, mark down any paper that
contains any unnecessary filler. Use 1
inch margins, double or single space your papers. Do not use any font over 12. I do not need title pages. I want to see your attempts to conserve paper,
not attempts to artificially lengthen.
Concise is always nice.
