Throughout this Roadmap Journal, you have been researching resources that will help you in your professional future—whether that is pursuing a new career or staying in the field you are in now. You have also been applying concepts from this course—including interpersonal communication, ethical theories, decision-making, and an understanding of the benefits of cultural diversity, the skills of the liberal arts, and the new norms and conventions of the workplace—to gain insight on the workplace you would like to be in. Finally, throughout the course, you have also been updating and adding to your ePortfolio to create a product you can use to demonstrate the competencies you have gained throughout your Bachelor’s in Liberal Arts degree.
Now, you are going to put these pieces together into a plan that demonstrates your achievement of the final program outcome and General Education Career Competency (GECC) assessed in this capstone course:
PO5: Develop a plan that integrates academic and professional experiences for achieving career goals.
GECC 7.1: Develop a career planning strategy that incorporates your strengths, interests, abilities, and values.
Begin by reviewing the Module 8 Presentation Part II and reading all of the resources in the presentation.
Step 1: Write a 3-page Career Plan Reflection
Write a journal entry of approximately 3 pages (approximately 750 words) reflecting on what you’ve learned in this course and how you plan to integrate your skills and self-understanding in a career plan.
Make sure your reflection addresses all of the following:
Begin by doing some critical self-reflection: What are your key areas of strength and why? How will these strengths aid you in your career plan? What are your key areas for improvement and why? How do you intend to improve? What do you value most? How do you intend to incorporate those values in a career plan?
Then, reflect on this capstone course and the program outcomes: What have you learned through this course, particularly the team project and the research project? How do you plan to incorporate these ideas and skills into your career plan? As a reminder, the Bachelor’s in Liberal Arts program outcomes are:
PO1: Articulate complex concepts to a targeted audience in written and oral form.
PO2: Analyze the influence of cultural diversity when addressing global issues.
PO3: Collaborate within a team to solve interdisciplinary problems or achieve a common goal.
PO4: Evaluate perspectives of an ethical dilemma and present evidence-based solutions.
PO5: Develop a plan that integrates academic and professional experiences for achieving career goals.
Then, consider your future and articulate a career plan: Imagine that in 10 years you are being interviewed by Excelsior’s Marketing department for a Life at ExcelsiorLinks to an external site. article like those you read in the Module 8 Presentation Part II. What will your article be about? Understanding your own strengths, abilities, and values, where do you plan to be in 5 or 10 years and how do you plan to get there? How did your degree and Excelsior help you get there? Incorporate at least 2 Excelsior resources from the links below that you have explored throughout these Roadmap Journals that can help you in your career plan:
Excelsior Career Readiness CenterLinks to an external site.
Excelsior Graduate Degree ProgramsLinks to an external site.
PortfoliumLinks to an external site.
Step 2: Update your ePortfolio
Your ePortfolio in PortfoliumLinks to an external site. should already have some content, including an introductory statement and a resume, from your previous work in this journal.
In this module, you should add the following components:
Add more content to your introductory statement: Now that you’ve been through this capstone course, add more content to your introductory statement to specifically and clearly capture your key strengths, abilities, and values and your primary career objective. Make sure this statement really captures the professional version of you—your personal brand, strengths, and what you can offer.
Add your global problem research paper: Add your global problem research paper by clicking on “add project” and uploading the file. Then provide a 1-2 sentence description of the project and add 3-5 skills associated with it.
Update your skills: Do you have any additional skills gained through this course experience? Add those to the list of skills you entered in Module 1.
Optional: Add additional projects from other courses as samples of your academic work to show employers. Customize and build your ePortfolio to suit your career needs going forward. This ePortfolio is yours to keep and continue to update after you graduate.
Note: In Portfolium, in the bottom right-hand corner is an option to chat with an expert. Please do take advantage of this option if you have any issues.
Finally, “share” your portfolio link with your instructor in the same document as your Career Plan reflection. You can find the link to your Portfolium account under your name as described in the directions above. If you changed your Privacy settings, make sure you use the private link as shown in the Portfolium directions.
Submission Instructions and Evaluation
You should submit both your journal entry and the link to your Portfolium account in the same document.
Your Roadmap journal entry should be approximately 750 words. It must be written entirely in your own words. It is not graded on grammar, syntax, and formatting, however, if you use a source in your entry, you must cite it in APA format appropriately.
