Persuasive Speech
This speech must:
Persuade the audience on a question of policy.
Policy claims:
Advocate action by organizations, institutions, or audience members;
Require special attention to evidence and reasoning.
Be organized using the motivated sequence.
Cover a topic that is relevant to your audience and has an arguable point of view. Remember that the target audience for your speech is your classmates, not those people present to witness your speech.
You will conduct an audience analysis of your classmates in a discussion area during Unit 6. This will allow you to choose and refine your topic.
Conform to a 5-7 minute time frame.
Use at least 6 pieces of evidence from at least 4 different sources.
Basic speech requirements:
Required outlines (Use the Motivated Sequence Outline Guides in Doc Sharing)
Working/preparation outline with:
Clear specific purpose statement;
Clear central idea statement;
Motivated sequence organizational pattern;
Specified outline format with:
Attention Step which contains:
An attention-getting statement,
A clear topic introduction statement,
A statement of the topic’s relevance to the audience,
A credibility statement,
A preview of the main points and transition to the body;
Body which contains:
Three main points (Need Step, Satisfaction Step, and Visualization Step) identified by Roman numerals,
Clear transitions between main points,
Supporting materials for each main point which are adequate, varied, and appropriate to the audience,
Action Step which contains:
A transition from the last main point to the conclusion,
A strong, appropriate closing statement
Internal summaries where appropriate.
Full sentences used throughout the outline;
A bibliography
Delivery/speaking outline with:
Outline format corresponding to the working outline,
Main points, subpoints, and sub-subpoints;
Only key words and phrases, except for:
Direct quotes;
Statistics;
Necessary citation information;
Difficult words
Brief transition notes
Delivery cues/notes
