Personal Philosophy of Nursing Paper Instructions
Nurses love to tell stories! Narrative pedagogy is learning through storytelling. Nehls (1995) defines this as an interpretive approach to teaching/learning/thinking that evolves from the lived experience of students, teachers, and clinicians.
You will describe your personal philosophy of nursing that includes the four elements of the metaparadigm of nursing (person, environment, health, and nursing) in a patient situation you experienced. The paper will be in APA format, but you may write in the “first-person” format.
The paper needs to be in APA format and include the following:
A title page (NO ABSTRACT IS NEEDED)
Introductory paragraph. There should be a thesis statement at the end of the introductory paragraph of the paper that sums up what the paper will encompass. (Tell them what you are going to tell them.)
The body of the paper will include your story about a time that stands out for you when caring for someone who was sick or injured. The story can be a current one or from years past. This can be a story of breakdown when nothing went right, or one in which everything went right. You will discuss how your personal philosophy of nursing (that includes the four elements of the metaparadigm of nursing—person, environment, health, and nursing) shaped and/or was shaped by this experience. If you feel a particular existing nursing theory applies, you may discuss that as well. (Tell them.)
Remember to add page numbers right upper corner. Times New Roman font, font size 12. One-inch margins. Headings are required, so include them as appropriate (Hint: In addition to using appropriate headings for the paragraphs throughout the paper, don’t forget the correct headings for the introductory paragraph and the conclusion). Normally, level 1 and level 2 headings are all you need for this paper, but it is fine if you need to use more types of headings.
Make sure to write a conclusion paragraph that restates what was in the paper without adding new information. (Tell them what you told them.)
Remember to include citations in APA format for sources that support your work. There should be no citations without matching references or vice-versa. Only one direct quote per paper is allowed in this program.
APA-style reference page; a minimum of two scholarly sources is required.
Page limit: 5-6 pages, not including title page and references.
