Background: First-generation Mexican-American born and raised in Los Angeles. I was the first person in my family to go to college so I had to figured it out and find resources and help and reach out to figure out the system. And because of this I was able to help my kids and my family members do the same.
————As a child and as the eldest daughter, I took on the role as a interpreter and helped my family and my extended family find resources, file taxes, fill out medical documents, and solve any issues that arose. I was not afraid to call up city offices and community groups and figure out things. I was always a people person and a problem-solver and held jobs that required me to talk to people. This includes Bank teller, real estate agent, notary, substitute teacher, interpreter and so on.
————-As an adult during my free time I volunteered at church by donating clothes and helping with food drives.
————-As a current substitute teacher, I have seen and heard the need for change within my community. Students have confided in me about their lives and the need for resources. I have provided my knowledge of own knowledge of helpful community resources as best as I can.
————-As a current part-time medical interpreter, I am often assisting with elder Hispanic men and women who talk to me about their issues. In these instances, I also provide my knowledge of city and state resources and help try to navigate them in the right direction.
