Early Childhood
You will perform a naturalistic observation for this assignment on a child in the early childhood developmental period. Use the video posted under the early childhood developmental period located on the “How to conduct an observation” page for your observation of physical development. Pretend that you are actually in the field performing this observation. (That means that you should not refer to or mention a video or camera or use any other terminology that alludes to this observation being a recording for your report.) Include the following in an observational report after observing the physical development of the subject:
Introduction paragraph: Start the introduction with an introductory sentence. Next, include the subject’s age, the biological sex, and developmental period. Provide a sentence that describes the setting (environment that contains the subject). Finally, include a short thesis statement (let’s the reader know the purpose of the essay) for the report.
Observation paragraph: Provide an objective description of what you observe the subject doing. Be sure to describe what you observed using objective language. Avoid presenting your opinions, judgments, evaluation, assumptions, analysis, or reflections in the observation. See table for examples.

Analysis paragraph: Analyze the behaviors that you described in the observation paragraph based on what you have learned about physical development of children from the selected developmental period. Specifically analyze 1) motor skills (gross and fine), 2) physical size (compared to the typical size at this age), and 3) activity level (high, moderate, or low) observed. Discuss typical versus atypical behaviors. Use academic language from the unit on physical development (at least 5 terms) presented in the list below to help you describe, explain, and analyze your observations. Please bold each term once.
