Patients requiring critical care often face health challenges
that are life threatening, compromising their physiological status and making
them more vulnerable to complications. Critical Care Nurses must have the knowledge,
skills and judgment to identify the clinical presentations, care requirements
and be able to manage and advocate as necessary any changes in their patient’s
clinical and psychological status.
It is more important than ever to create and enhance
partnerships, because the resulting interdependence and collaboration among
disciplines is essential to achieving positive patient outcomes. (Urden etal
2022 page 7)
The Canadian
Association of Critical Care Nurses (CACCN) is committed to developing
practice standards to support the care requirements of the critically ill and

of care, the critical care nurse also utilizes collaborative initiatives to
support and promote delivery of safe, compassionate, competent and ethical
critical care nursing practice.
The focus of this paper is related to the CACCN Standard 6: – Critical Care Nurses promote
