PART ONE FINAL ESSAY Answer this prompt: How does the Black Death affect European society and culture?
The bubonic plague arrived in Europe during the already tumultuous fourteenth century. You are asked to write an essay explaining how this affected European society and culture.
The primary sources from Week 13 provide many responses to the Black Death, and you will use these to provide evidence for your arguments. Additionally, I have provided you with data visualizations that show the location of plague outbreaks, as well as their numbers during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
In your essays, please consider how groups of Europeans would have understood the plague, and how they would have responded to it. It’s possible that different groups of people would have had different responses. (For example, the elite vs. the commoners, or the clergy vs. medical doctors.) You are free to consider a single group or to compare and contrast responses. Just be sure that your response offers a clear answer to the question above.
Requirements:
Your essay should be at least 500 words.
You must quote from at least two different written sources.
Please provide a brief citation that reflects the source you use. For example (Paris Medical Report), (de Meaux), (Florentine Chronicle), (de Venette), (Decameron), or (Flagellants). ALL CITED LINKS ARE LISTED IN EVERY CHAPTER BELOW ONLY USE THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BELOW I also expect you to make reference to some of the visualized data, and you can insert the viz number, like (V3) to cite this. WHICH US ALSO LISTED BELOW MAKE SURE THERE IS ZERO AI DETECTION LISTED.
PART 2 TIMELINE: Final Project Timeline
Essentially, I’m asking you to think about your answer to the final essay prompt in chronological way that could be shown on a timeline. So, what you display will be very different depending on your prompt. (See the Final Project folder if you haven’t yet.) This timeline will have a Title slide and 3-5 additional entries, all with an image.
You can (and probably should) include an entry for your primary sources, but you’ll want to adjust your descriptions to make sense in this context. For example, if you use the selection on the “Secret History” from unit 12, you will want to be clear on how this source demonstrates the political context that allowed the plague to spread across Asia to Europe. I imagine that students wouldn’t be thinking about this when constructing Timeline 2, so an edit will be necessary for the primary sources.
If you create an entry for both of the required primary sources, then you will only need 1-3 additional entries on your timeline. Again, what you choose will be dependent upon which option you choose and how you answer the question, but there are several significant dates and locations provided in the data visualizations that would make a lot of sense.
And your Title slide could reflect the essay prompt OR your own answer. Either would be appropriate.
