Part of the challenge is to identify the theories as they are shown in the movies.

At the individual level, you MUST do a complete Big 5 analysis for at least one character.  That means all 5 must be evaluated for one character, not that you use all 5 but for various characters.  I also expect you to use other individual level theories  — motivation, other personality theories (chapters 9 & 10), commitment, job satisfaction, stress — pretty much all chapters 1-10.  The theories that show up are different from movie to movie, so there’s no exact list.  Part of the challenge is to identify the theories as they are shown in the movies.  The movies on the list have been selected precisely because they do show many of the theories, particularly at this level, so your issue should be keeping to the 5 pages, not getting to 5 pages.
A good rule of thumb format for addressing these in the paper is:
Character ABC shows that s/he is high/low/has trait PQR when s/he does VWX (or because s/he does blah, blah and blah).
You don’t have to define the theories for me. The goal here is to get you to see these in situations.
Movie Project            You will assess a movie in light of the theories we have discussed in class.  You will select a movie from the list following or the larger list posted on Blackboard.  Grades from this paper will represent 10% of your final grade.  I will read no more than 5 typewritten pages, double-spaced, 1″ margins, 12-point font.  In my assessment of your papers, 90% of the grade will go toward content, 10% will go toward style.    Style will include both following the instructions about length, editing and spacing as well as writing style.  A more detailed rubric is also posted on Blackboard.  I WILL PENALIZE YOU FOR EXCESSIVE USE OF PASSIVE VOICE.  If you do not know how to avoid passive voice, eliminating use of the verb “to be” in all of its forms will help you avoid passive voice.  Why do I make you do this?  In discussing communication, most of the corporate officers I speak with tell me that communicating clearly and briefly will go far in getting their attention.  For this paper, you will use the theories we have discussed in class and which you have read about in your textbook to explain the action taking place in the movie.
Movies to choose from:
Bull Durham                                       Apollo 13
The Firm                                             Erin Brockovich (this one is harder)
Top Gun                                              Twister
Starship Troopers                               Harry Potter
Oceans 11                                           Monsters, Inc.
If you have other suggestions for movies, please discuss them with me BY THE DATE POSTED IN THE SYLLABUS.
Grading Rubric:
Individual level                                   45 points
Group or organizational level             45 points
Style/Grammatical correctness           10 points
I’d like you to use the theories we’ve talked about in class to analyze the main characters and the primary groups and/or organizations in the film.  You don’t have to do every character, but you do need to do the main ones.  Who and how many obviously changes from movie to movie.  For example, if you were doing Office Space (which you can’t), you’d be remiss if you didn’t do Milton and Peter, but you needn’t do Jennifer Anniston’s character.  Similarly, if you did Milton but omitted the big 5, you’d be missing an important and relevant (and expected) chunk of analysis.  Not every theory is relevant, though.  I don’t expect you do take the spaghetti approach and throw something up for all the theories and hope that something sticks.  I do expect a well-reasoned analysis.  Do not get caught up in the facts of the movies. I’ve seen each of them MANY times.  But DO tell me why a character is being rated the way you say.  Example:  Milton is an introvert because he prefers his radio and his filing.  He is high on uncertainty avoidance because he gets nervous every time is desk is moved and he hangs on to his red stapler.  A longer sample movie analysis is posted on Blackboard as well.  Remember that the big 5 needs to be done for at least one character (all items addressed for that character).
