Week 3 – Collaborative Assignment: Cultural Differences
Part II: Teamwork: Create a list of 3 to 5 key cultural practices or factors that could impact health care program delivery to the Hmong community. Include a 2- to 3-sentence description to support your choices.
From all of the data provided from the book “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down” and our research, we have highlighted the following key cultural practices that  can significantly affect and impact healthcare delivery:
(1) The reliance on traditional healing methods can often lead to miscommunication, distrust, and conflicts between patients and healthcare providers.
– Additionally, the integration of traditional healing methods into healthcare delivery can pose challenges for healthcare systems in terms of standardization, regulation, and safety.
– It may lead to a lack of adherence to Western medical treatments prescribed by healthcare providers. Patients who prioritize traditional healing methods may be less inclined to follow medication regimens or attend follow-up appointments, which can compromise their health outcomes. This can create tension and mistrust in the patient-provider relationship, hindering effective communication and collaboration.
– Lastly, traditional healing methods may delay or deter patients from seeking timely medical care, especially for acute or serious conditions. Patients may opt for traditional remedies first, hoping for a resolution, which can result in delayed diagnosis and treatment, potentially exacerbating their condition.
(2) Religious Beliefs: The Hmong community’s healthcare practices are closely connected to their religious and spiritual beliefs. They are known for their animistic beliefs, which hold that all objects, places, and creatures possess a spiritual essence. Some members of The Hmong community prefer  Western medical treatments, while others adhere strictly to traditional methods. They look at illness as an supernatural event caused by spirts. The concept of illness as the loss of an individual’s soul encourages the use of rituals to heal, which is a significant departure from Western medical practices.
(3) The lack of interpreters for the Hmong culture has led to them not being able to understand what treatment is being performed for them or their family members.  It is hard to make them well as they don’t have a clear understanding of what is being done or understand the consent being given for treatment.
– Members of the community can not properly follow-up with their appointments because they do notunderstand the written or verbal instructions.
– They cannot properly administer medications.
– They cannot provide proper care when them or a family member is discharged home.
– They cannot properly convey symptoms to the physicians outside of what may be visible from the eye or from testing.
