Examining the pros and cons of unions in professional sports provides valuable insight into their impact on both players and the industry as a whole.
On the positive side, unions play a crucial role in encouraging for the rights and well-being of athletes (Carrell, 2013). One of the primary benefits of unions is their ability to negotiate collective bargaining agreements (CBA’s) that establish minimum salaries, healthcare benefits, and working conditions for players (Macklon, 2023). These agreements help ensure that athletes are fairly compensated for their contributions to the sports industry and have access to necessary resources for their physical and mental health without feeling that they do not have support or someone to go to.
Moreover, unions provide a platform for players to address issues such as safety concerns, discrimination, and unfair treatment by team owners or management (Carrell, 2013). In sports, injuries are common and careers can end within a blink of an eye, having a collective voice to address these concerns is essential for protecting the long-term interests of athletes.
