Go to http://virtualbiologylab.org/ModelsHTML5/PopGenFishbowl/PopGenFishbowl.html.
Go through the “Background Information” and Tutorial” sections to learn about the simulation and the science behind it.
Then click “Run Experiments.” Click the “to design” arrow and observe the default demographic information. Go back to “to data” and run a simulation spanning 25 generations. Note the data on the resulting population size and on the percentages on the allele proportions and genotype proportions.
Next, go back to the “design page” and make a change to any one input under “population demographics” that you think will alter the data (which input to use, how big a change and in which direction is up to you). Then go back to “data” and run another simulation spanning 25 generations. Please make only one change, as making multiple changes will make explaining your results too complex. Note the data on the resulting population size and on the percentages on the allele proportions and genotype proportions.
Next, go back to the “design page” and make a change to any of the evolutionary parameters you like (migration rate, mutation rate or genotype relative fitness). Which one to change, how much and in which direction is up to you. Please make only one change, as making multiple changes will make explaining your results too complex. Then go back to “data” and run another simulation spanning 25 generations. Note the data on the resulting population size and on the percentages on the allele proportions and genotype proportions.
Please prepare a chart with the data in your first simulation, second simulation and third simulation, including the population size, allele proportions and genotype proportions.
Then write an essay explaining:
Which change you made under population demographics between the first and second simulation.
The effect that the change had on the simulated data
A scientific explanation of why the change you made causes the changes to the simulation data that you observed.
Which change you made under evolutionary parameters between the second and third simulation.
The effect that the change had on the simulated data
A scientific explanation of why the change you made causes the changes to the simulation data that you observed.
The precisely length of the assignment is left to your discretion, but discussion of the effects of each of the two changes and the scientific reasons behind the results probably requires 2-3 paragraphs for each of the two changes.
