Paragraph 1:
1. Choose a philosophical issue or problem (e.g. What is justice? Does free will exist? What is knowledge or how is it acquired? Does God exist? What makes something a moral action? etc.). State two specific and opposing viewpoints on this particular issue (for example: “Free will exists and free will does not exist” etc.)
Paragraph 2:
2. In one paragraph, explain two different reasons given by people who hold the first viewpoint. You must cite at least one reputable source for these reasons. You can use your textbook as a reputable source.
3. In a second paragraph, explain two different reasons given by people who hold the second viewpoint. You must cite at least one reputable source for these reasons. You can use your textbook as a reputable source.
Paragraphs 3-4:
4. Choose one philosophical theory and/or principle studied in this class and, in one or two paragraphs, explain how someone holding that theory or principle would respond to each of the two viewpoints discussed above (e.g. what would a hard determinist say about free will?).
· You must provide reasons based on the theories and/or principles themselves for why someone holding that particular theory or principle would respond to that question in that way.
· You will use two sources to back up your reasons for why you think this theory or principle would apply in this way to these two perspectives. These sources must be reputable. Your textbook can make up at least one of these sources. Scroll to the bottom of this assignment for suggested sources and ways to find reputable sources.
Paragraph 5-6:
5. State which of the two viewpoints discussed in #1 you most agree with and, in a short paragraph, explain at least two reasons why you agree that that is the viewpoint that you agree with the most.
6. Then, explain why someone might hold the opposing view and what two specific parts of that opposing view you disagree with.
