Paper 2:
Students write a paper that defends their conclusion regarding one of these five topics:
(1) Is price gouging ever ethically permissible? If not, why not? If so, under what conditions?
(2) Can corporations be obligated to limit their negative environmental impact more than the law requires? Why or why not?
(3) Are there forms of deception that are morally permissible in business negotiations? If not, explain why. If so, what are they, and under what conditions are they permissible?
(4) Is it ethically permissible for American companies to operate sweatshops abroad? Why or why not?
(5) Identify and analyze an ethical dilemma in business related to the COVID-19 pandemic subject to the instructor’s advance approval.
In developing this second paper, students shall delve deep and engage the arguments that are presented in class readings. They should defend a specific ethical conclusion and offer three to five crisp, clear, well-reasoned arguments in support of it, explicitly drawing from the theoretical frameworks discussed in several class readings. Students should write the paper in a way that makes it clear what their premises are, and that gives their reader strong reasons for accepting them. It may be helpful to present and assess the strongest objection students can think of to their own view. The best papers will also have something interesting or somewhat original to say. To reiterate, for a guide on what is interesting, REVIEW THIS ARTICLE. Similarly, for a guide on how you may write more clearly, REVIEW THIS SHORT PAPER.
Students are encouraged to develop a structure that best fits their voice and chosen topic for this second paper for the course. Alternatively, they may choose to use the framework from Paper 1 in writing this paper: that is, explain why this topic of choice represents a dilemma, assess the impact on the stakeholders, identify and examine alternatives, and identify the most preferred alternative and explain why.
Here are other requirements for this paper:
• 2500 words, with an acceptance of 50 words deviance. That is, the acceptable upper limit for this paper is 2550 words and the acceptable lower limit is 2450 words. Otherwise, one fourth of the points will be deducted for each 50 words deviation.
• Times New Roman 12-point, double spaced, APA or MLA citation style.
• Word document (not pdf) with the word count shown on the upper right corner of page 1
Consistent with Paper 1, it is optional to have an abstract or cover page for this paper. Neither one counts towards the word limit. References do not count towards the word limit, in-text citations do. All sources must be cited in the text and the reference page. Any time students draw on a source, whether quoting, paraphrasing, or referring to an idea from that source, they must cite the relevant source. This extends to citing their own previously graded work as well.
