There are newly hired practitioners that have very little to no expertise in dermatology. The office lacks established protocols for medical practitioners to follow when recognizing concerning moles or utilizing screening instruments to detect melanoma. This can cause a postponement in the timely identification of skin cancer, which can result in unfavorable consequences for the patient. The United States experienced an estimated 3.3 million incidences of skin cancer and over 7,500 fatalities attributed to melanoma in 2022 (Siegel et al., 2022). Southern California experiences an annual diagnosis of over 35,000 new cases of skin cancer, making it the state with the second-highest incidence rate in the country (Siegel et al., 2022). Being ranked second highest in terms of incidence rate across the country provides even greater motivation to establish a screening program that can aid newly employed practitioners in accurately identifying skin cancer and detecting early-stage melanoma.The PICO question I have developed is the following:
Population: Newly hired healthcare providers that consist of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants with minimal dermatology expertise
Intervention: Implementation of a melanoma screening initiative
Comparison: Not having a melanoma screening in place
