Overview:
The research paper is the preferred genre of the academy. In any and all academic disciplines you will find scholars investigating topics of interest to them and to their peers, arguing specific claims or conclusions derived from data collection and analysis, and organizing ideas into clear and readable prose uniquely suited to a given readership. Importantly however, while the researched paper is a commonplace, there are many different ways to go about selecting, researching, organizing and revising any written argument. This paper is all about you beginning to work with these choices as you develop and realize a researched argument.
Your paper should combine the three (3) full pages of your Literature Review completed in the previous step and create five (5) full pages of argument on your topic. The final paper will be 8 full pages, plus a correctly formatted MLA Works Cited page.
Requirements:
A clear, specific and argumentative thesis/goal backed by well-developed claims and substantial supporting evidence
Fair and critical consideration of sources
An implied audience—your tone, topic, and supporting examples should all be geared toward a specific reader (which you may “name” in the paper if you wish) who is academically minded, discipline specific, and interested in the same kinds of problems that you are investigating
Five (5) sources minimum—3 should be peer reviewed
Summarize, paraphrase and quote using the correct format
Do not use Wikipedia, or any other encyclopedia or dictionary as a source. These can be helpful to get you started on your research, but they are not good sources for an academic paper
Typed, double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman font
Eight (8) FULL pages + Works Cited page (you can use ALL of your Literature Review)
Correct citations (MLA )
