Overview
A particular challenge in involvement of interested parties is that in many, if not most, cases, a small (or maybe large) group of interested parties may not agree with the management decision and use the ready access to modern communication methods (e.g., social media) to magnify their stance. This may result in a public perception that the decision and engagement process was not fair or that interested parties were not adequately involved.
The paper by Walker et al (2006) provides a good description of Senecah’s ‘Trinity of Voice’ theory and how it interacts with engagement approaches and conflict resolution. The authors provide a couple of examples of natural resource management situations and discuss how collaborative approaches to engagement of the interested parties can create voice and influence conflict.

For this discussion, discuss how managers’ feedback, dissenting groups’ ready access to media, and ‘trinity of voice’ are interrelated. Can we learn from and manage the effect of a small, vocal dissenting group? What does the existence of these dissenting groups tell us about our engagement process?
