Overview:  Your task is to help build an understanding of how racial inequality

June 25, 2024

Overview:  Your task is to help build an understanding of how racial inequality plays out in neighborhoods by profiling Austin in Chicago.  Your paper should critically reflect on how various factors such as income, home ownership, politics, education, health, and access (or lack of access) to jobs has shaped your chosen community.  Also consider how historical policies of redlining and other practices post-World War II (e.g. outright refusals of certain communities to admit minorities, block busting by unethical realtors, and white flight) have impacted your chosen community.
Final paper is to be 5-7 pages long, double-spaced (that means 5-7 pages of content, your reference page and optional title page do NOT count).  Cite your sources using an APA style in-text citations and a reference page.
Your first task is to sign up for a Community Area.  We’re trying to build an understanding of the entire city, so only one person per Community Area.  You can find the sign up sheet here. Community Area Sign-Up SheetLinks to an external site.
Key resources:
Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, Community SnapshotsLinks to an external site. –   We commonly think of Chicago as a city of neighborhoods, but the official designation of geographic space is called a Community Area.  Data on those CCAs is collected by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.  Follow the link to find your chosen CCA.  Note: the Chicago Community Areas are at the very bottom of the page.  Scroll wayyyy down.
