The purpose of this assignment is to design and plan a session for an educational group. You will create a plan for facilitation as if you were going to conduct this group with clients. In addition to a written plan, you will also complete a video recording of you conducting one of the interactive activities for your group. In a separate assignment, you will also share the videorecording with your peers in a discussion board for their feedback.
INSTRUCTIONS
For this assignment, imagine that you are a social worker running an 8-week educational group for adolescent boys who are aging out of the foster care system. These 12 young men are currently in stable foster care placements, but they are being prepared for independent living in approximately 6 months.
Imagine you are working with this same group of boys each week for one hour for a total of 8 weeks. This is your 4th session with them. Every week you address a topic that will help them prepare for independent living. They have been strongly encouraged to attend, although attendance is not mandatory. So far, you’ve been successful in engaging them, and they all usually come to every session.
For this assignment, you will plan this one-hour session with the group. You will need to select a topic for this session that you think is relevant and meets the goals of your group. The format should be highly interactive, with hands-on, experiential learning. Groups should not be primarily lecturing format, since part of a group’s purpose is to facilitate mutual learning and application. Be sure to consider your audience in terms of the best approach – in both content and the type and style of activities.
