Overview: As I’m sure you are all aware, there has been a rise in hate groups not just around the world but in the United States, especially since 2000. This Module will help you understand the roots of these groups in the United States and why they are on the rise. The mistaken beliefs these groups have can be traced all the way back to the first European settlers of the East Coast of America and their unfounded belief in European superiority. They saw themselves as God’s chosen people, and the small pox and other diseases they brought, which the natives had no immunity against, as the hand of God, clearing the land for his chosen people. You will also learn about the master narrative of American history (still taught in some schools) and its mistaken belief that only white, Anglo-Saxon Europeans settled America and only they are true Americans. Finally, you will learn what scientists and sociologists mean when they say race is a social construct, without any biological basis, created by those in power to disenfranchise others.
In this Module you will prepare for and write a proposal or recommendation to someone in authority at one of the schools you have attended to convince them that they must make some aspect or all of the curriculum more multicultural or to commend them for having instituted an excellent multicultural learning experience. Alternatively, you may write a proposal or recommendation to someone in authority at your workplace to convince them that they need to set up a program in diversity training or to expand the training they currently do.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this Module students will be able to:
Explain key terms in their proposal or recommendation to explain and defend their points about a multicultural education: multi-culture, mono-culture, inclusion, diversity, stereotype, equity, social justice, critical thinking, multiple points of view, master narrative of American history, culture, race as a social construct, hate groups, political correctness.
Create body paragraphs that apply appropriate source material, identifying relevant connections between the sources and integrating sources paraphrased and connected in meaningful ways into their own arguments to support a claim, including paragraphs that integrate three or more sources per paragraph.
Create body paragraphs that distinguish their ideas from source ideas by proper signal phrases and parenthetical documentation.
Create unified and coherent explanations/arguments of at least paragraph length for each argumentative point.
Defend and justify their ideas, refuting invalid counter-arguments or conceding a minor point to the opposition if justified.
Create and connect new ideas by collaborating with classmates in discussions.
Evaluate their own writing and the writing of peers, critiquing their own writing and applying the comments of teacher and peers to revise their essays.
Reflect on any hidden or unacknowledged prejudices they may have toward different cultural, religious, or ethnic groups.
Create or strengthen diverse relationships in their lives and an appreciation of other cultures (their own and others) by applying what they have learned to their own lives.
Engage in critical thinking about the quality of a multicultural education at a school they attended or diversity training in their workplace.
The initial videos and initial links to articles below are provided to help you identify the allusions that Ehrenreich makes to famous individuals representative of either Western monoculture or multi-culture. These figures include Plato, Rabelais, Shange, Homer, Matthew Arnold. The explanation of Orwell’s Two Minute Hate in 1984 holds a clue to what she meant by her ironic comment at the beginning of her article that multiculturalism is a workable substitute to replace the threat of communism. If thought about carefully, Orwell’s Two Minute Hate also helps explain the rise in hatred and bigotry in the U.S. and around the world. Orwell was politically astute. The remaining articles and videos help you define what a multicultural education teaches and why it is so important today.
Do a rough draft for paper 4, including an introduction, conclusion, and four body paragraphs for the sets of questions for the videos we have viewed, each paragraph at least 2/3 of a page double-spaced, explaining the aspect of a multicultural education the question addresses. You must view, take notes, and integrate material (properly MLA documented with signal phrase and proper parenthetical documentation) from a number of the sources listed under each question, mostly in the form of paraphrase. (You may find it useful to jot down approximate beginning and ending times of material in your notes, so you don’t have to review the video.) You may also include a quote no longer than a sentence if you think it is memorably worded and encapsulates an important point. These should be body paragraphs. Do not sound like you are answering questions and you must provide sufficient concrete details from the sources to back up your claim.
Your paraphrases and quotes should be properly MLA documented, beginning with a signal phrase and ending with parenthetical documentation, listing the beginning and ending time of the material from the source. Your paper should also have a Works Cited.
these are some sources required to use, the rest are attatched but theese are the links:
