June 30, 2024

Objective:
To analyze a short film and to include researched support for your argument.
Method:
Students will choose a short film, no longer than 40 minutes in length. Students can visit websites with free access such as:
https://www.shortoftheweek.com/channels/Links to an external site.
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=short+filmsLinks to an external site.
https://www.filmsshort.com/Links to an external site.
National Geographic Short FilmsLinks to an external site.
If you have streaming service, you might also view sites such as Amazon Prime, Disney+ or Netflix.
When choosing a film, view a variety of genres until you find one that interests you. Maybe the film changes your view about something, tugs at an emotion, helps you relax, or could be just a waste of your time. Be sure to view the film more than once for anything you might have missed.
What to Include:
Based on your choice, introduce your topic and begin with a brief overview, specifically for an audience who has not seen the film. Lead to your thesis statement.
Analyze the film based on the criteria that you decide (this should be in your thesis statement/evaluation). Here, the criteria may be aspects of the film or a major component such as the story, a specific character, issues raised, or theme.
As you write, consider how you will support your ideas. Your support should include scenes of the film for evidence as well as your own reasoning. You must also include ‘hard’ evidence and one form of evidence must be a journal article or book. You may also include a credible website article, blog, or film review to support your argument about the film.
Use Gale Academic OneFile, Gale General OneFile, Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints, or JSTOR (popular databases for articles and ebooks). To search the databases, go to: https://library.hccs.edu/az.php
Finish with your overall thoughts. What should readers come away with after reading your review?
What to Avoid:
Do not write about a movie longer than 40 minutes or a “blockbuster” movie. You will risk a low grade or a grade of 0.
Resist writing a long summary or overview of the movie as your essay. If your essay reads as a retelling of the movie, you have not provided any analysis.
Forgetting the thesis statement. View my samples for examples of how to structure your essay.
Not being comfortable discussing the short movie. Be sure you have a good grasp of the movie; watch it a few times.
Only including evidence from online sources that you have searched using Google or another search engine. If you have questions searching for sources, review the Understanding Sources Module, ask a librarian, or email me. I can help you find sources or brainstorm ideas when finding sources.
