Objective:
The objective is for students to design and construct a lightweight double-sided protest sign; front & back, with a handle that can be carried at a march, demonstration, non-violent protest, sit-in, walkout, boycott, or all of the above, but that describes, identifies, explains an idea or concept, or justifies your stand or decision on a social justice issue/s relevant to the course or its subject matter. If it is against your religion to protest or create a protest sign follow the direction below under Against My Religion.
OPTION 1
You will need to design and create a lightweight double-sided protest sign. Your protest sign will have to be both front & back, it must have a handle that can be carried at a march, demonstration, non-violent protest, sit-in, walkout, boycott, or all of the above, but that describes, identifies, explains an idea or concept, or justifies your stand or decision on a social justice issue/s relevant to the course or its subject matter.
OPTION 2
Create a visual art project or collage (not a visual or info display board), which artistically demonstrates your knowledge on the subject. It must includes various types of images: historical, cultural, and political photos or art that symbolically or metaphorically represent your research topic. An art project or collage is ideal, if it is against your religion to protest.

You will upload images of your protest sign or art project along with a description of your research topic. Students may include either summary or reflection analysis so that your classmates’ can read.
Students will create either a double sided protest sign or visual art project related to the minority group you researched in Part 1 of your Midterm.
Make sure to include either the summary and reflection, so that your can learn from your researched topic.

OPTION 1
How to Make Protest SignsLinks to an external site.
Directions and Guidelines:
Students will create a Two Protest signs: Front & Back or Visual Art Poster: Front & Back on a topic or theme relevant to your Research Paper Minority Group
The Protest sign must be at least 16” x 20” (anything smaller will be marked down or considered incomplete)
Recycle, Reduce, Repurpose, & Reuse: try to use supplies/materials found around the house before purchasing new items. Recycled cardboard boxes, foam board, or presentation boards.
If you wish to paint or design an art piece on art canvas, you may do so as well. I will provide samples of students past projects below.
All signs must have 3 to 5 colors, which include the background, font, font outline, or images.
Consider using markers, highlighters, crayons, color pencils, old make-up and face paint, even leftover house paint, spray paint, acrylic, tempera or watercolor paint (avoid things that smear).
Font should be large and bold to see from a distance therefore all font should be outlined with a dark marker or paint that will contrast the background.
All words should properly fit within each sign, so measure and lightly sketch out your message or drawing first.
Violent messages, vulgar language and profanity are not allowed or recommend, as it scares away the media and it prevents your sign from making the news/paper.
All words have to be spell-checked and all data should be fact checked.
All signs must be designed with a handle that can be lifted 3’ (feet) above your head.
Handles can be made from various things found around the house that are sturdy such as a yardstick, detachable broom or mop stick, PVC pipe or from an adjustable metal cane or walking/hiking stick.
Signs or hand painted banners on canvas that are 36” (inches) wide or larger do not need to be double-sided, but if they do require an additional person/s to carry it keep in mind how your team will carry or lift it off the ground for long periods of time without it dragging on the floor or turning into a sail that will thus making it difficult to walk against the wind.
Students also need to keep in mind how their protest sign will be assembled and dissembled before and after the protest and how it will be transported (bus, metro, car, bike, foot, etc.) to and from the event.
Students can also paint or paste an image/s related to your research project to their sign.
Students can also design a collage throughout their sign and paste enlarged font or words
Signs can also include 3D objects or have elements that pop out of the protest sign
Consider applying key terms and definitions throughout your poster to educate the public.
Include illustrations: images, comics, etc. related to your research topic or minority group; print them large enough for people to see from afar.
Avoid leaving blank or empty spaces
Against My Religion
Some religions disapprove and do not permit people from participating in protests and from making a protest signs.
If it is against your religion to protest or create a protest sign, you must notify me directly and/or mention it within your assignment’s submission.
However, you are still not exempt from completing the Midterm Research Paper nor completing the Visual Art Project.
Rather than creating a Double sided Protest Sign you will complete Option 2; create a Visual Art Poster
You may also use religious or spiritual quotes or proverbs from your scripture or Bible as the context within your Visual Art Project
Avoid using religious symbols or iconography if it is against your religion.
OPTION 2
