Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to develop students’ research and critical analysis skills by creating an annotated bibliography on a chosen topic. Annotated bibliographies require students to evaluate and summarize scholarly sources, promoting a deeper understanding of the chosen subject matter.
Background: When historians write research papers, they begin by creating an annotated bibliography over the topic. An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to articles about the topic as well as a brief 250-300 word analysis of the article. In the analysis, you both summarize and evaluate the article to explain what it about, how it contributes to understanding a topic, and the credentials of the author. In leu of writing a research paper this semester, you will creating an annotated bibliography over a topic within United States History from precontact to Reconstruction.
Instructions:
Topic Selection:
Choose a topic of personal or academic interest within the scope of the course.
Ensure the topic is specific enough to allow for in-depth exploration but broad enough to find a variety of scholarly articles.
Source Requirements:
Identify and include a minimum of seven (7) scholarly articles. These may include academic journals from JSTOR, EBSCO, ABC-CLIO, GALE, etc.
You will not be allowed to use any articles already listed in the course material and you may NOT use encyclopedia-style sources such as Britannica. This assignment is not a summary of the topic.
Sources should present differing viewpoints or approaches to the chosen topic. For examples, if I was researching female participation in WWII, I would look for articles about WACS, WAVES, WASPS, women working in factories, female USO participation, female nurses, female scientists, etc. Each article I chose would need to be over a differing aspect or perspective. This is why choosing a topic that you can find enough articles is imperative!
Annotated Bibliography Format:
For each source, provide a full citation in Chicago format.
Follow each citation with a concise annotation (approximately 250-300 words) that includes:
A summary of the source’s main arguments or findings.
An evaluation of the source’s reliability, credibility, and relevance to the chosen topic. This is where you would want to include the author’s credentials.
A reflection on how the source contributes to the overall understanding of the topic.
Submission Guidelines:
Typed, double-spaced document.
Use a standard font (e.g., Times New Roman, Arial, calibri) and 12-point font size.
Include your name, course title, instructor’s name, and submission date in the top right hand corner.
Evaluation Criteria:
Adherence to the specified format (citation style, annotation length).
Selection of relevant, scholarly sources.
Quality of annotations, including critical analysis and synthesis of information.
Demonstrated understanding of the chosen topic.
Proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
